iran poses little threat to us. and if they attacked us after we left, or even if they launched some major attack on israel, that would generate enough support to go forward with a war legitimately. why do we need to negotiate a ceasefire against a country that has no significant way to attack us if we don't have shit parked within striking distance of their borders?

attacking saudi arabia would draw them into the conflict though. right now they can just sit on the sidelines. and then we'd have a legitimate reason to reengage.

same thing with us bases. if we end our hostilities, and iran attacks us, we'd have a legitimate reason to reengage and there would be significant support for it.

as others have pointed out, if we leave iran will bomb the shit out of our bases and israel and draw us back in. they control when this ends - we do not, period.

this entire situation was such a clusterfuck

Because if "we" (the "United States") just leave without a formal and "binding" ceasefire agreement, Israel will just keep attacking Iran and committing terrorism etc against them. And then Iran will keep attacking Israel (and the gulf states) in return, "obligating" "us" to come to their "defense." There can never be any genuine peace or cessation of hostilities

The whole situation is completely ridiculous because it's literally just Israel behaving in a completely psychopathic manner and they are only behaving that way because they know that the "United States" will always come to their "defense"

The situation is even MORE ridiculous now because Iran has demonstrated in practice that they can close the strait at any time, very easily, at will, and bring the entire global economy to its knees. They hold all of the leverage. If the other guy holds all the leverage, you have to try to restrain him via a treaty/binding agreement

This whole fiasco is truly absurd. Like you really could not "ask for" a better demonstration of the elected members of the US federal government being completely pathetic, shameless sellouts for a few shekels from Jewish lobbyists

yeah i guess i'm coming from this from the POV that we should just leave middle eastern affairs to the middle east. which at this point is unrealistic because of how we've inserted ourselves into it for decades.

it just fucking sucks.

your OP assumes that we turn the clock back to like 1939 and adopt an actually isolationist stance. we're unfortunately in a position where we have all these retarded alliances (and so have to attack if the gulf states get attacked), and our government is (now openly) occupied by israel.

it's a complete shitshow. the war hopefully illustrates to normies that our continued involvement in the ME is retarded as all fuck.

it's not so much that, it's that if we did just end hostilities unilaterally, and iran attacked us or our allies in some significant way, then there'd be enough support for the war that we might be able to engage in a meaningful way and have a legitimate reason to do so.

what i discounted too much is that israel will just keep doing jew shit and provoke an attack because they have a fannie mae implicit guarantee we'll protect them. but if that happened there would likely be sufficient support for the war that we'd be able to engage in earnest.

the worst thing to do is what we've been doing for decades: half-hearted engagements. we should either enforce our authority in the region or leave it completely.

but mr art of the deal hasn't thought of that i don't think. the israel connection (the entire reason for the way) makes any of this impossible. they will absolutely not take a ceasefire and will kill it no matter what it takes.

yeah i mean of course none of this *will* happen with trump and israel at the table. but it's not like a ceasefire does anything but justify a response if it's broken. likewise, if we simply left, and iran amplified hostilities, that would justify a response too.

i think the biggest reason trump is insisting on a ceasefire is so it's something he can use to claim we were successful. which is probably a big reason iran doesn't even want to speak with him.

this is huge. given what we did to iran twice in a row (bad faith negotiations, only to just bomb them out of nowhere during), why the fuck is any foreign country ever going to believe the US again? at least over the next 3 years.
