No. Troubled by fits of insanity, frustrated by his inability to sell a single painting, dependent on his loving brother's largesse, struggling to realize the FEELING of his subjects, no, not happy.

This is an interesting and complex question. In the modern sense of the word, I’d probably say no, fundamentally, Vincent was not happy. But when I think about him, did I see him during his life in periods—even if fleeting—of deep fulfillment and contentment? Yes.

It’s not. He worked on Roots that morning but he wasn’t actively painting when he shot himself (or was shot) that evening.

When he was in the asylum, counterintuitively perhaps, it gave him a significant sense of stability, although he would eventually grow tired of the other patients many of whom were struggling with that much more serious issues and were unreasonable to interact with.

“To me, van Gogh is the finest painter of them all. Certainly the most popular great painter of all time. The most beloved. His command of color the most magnificent. He transformed the pain of his tormented life into ecstatic beauty. Pain is easy to portray, but to use your passion and pain to portray the ecstasy and joy and magnificence of our world … no one had ever done it before. Perhaps no one ever will again. To my mind, that strange wild man who roamed the fields of Provence was not only the world’s greatest artist, but also one of the greatest men who ever lived.”

If you’re in Amsterdam this spring, please enjoy this new exhibit we’ve put together, exploring Vincent’s evocative use of yellow throughout his art:
