Last year I moved my older kids to a club with a strong team but a culture that understands that kids have lives outside of soccer. The message I try to send them is that soccer is a fun activity and that’s it. I don’t want them to feel any pressure to perform well on the field out of obligation to someone else or that their value as a person is in any way tied to their athletic achievements. |

Example of this-our travel club breaks down into three levels- ECNL, Challenge, Classic. Within Challenge and classic, there are red and blue teams, with blue being the better of the two. My son isn't a world beater, but is ok, so he was ok being placed on classic. Within the classic, he missed the day they evaluated for blue vs. red, so he was placed on red. Little disappointed, but it's 12 year old soccer, so we told him to suck it up life isn't always fair. Coach realizes he should've been on blue, so he ends up playing in both red and blue games, which means that we've gone to a lot of soccer games since January.
The parents of some of the kids on blue are absolutely insane. For some reason, they like my kid because he's decent, but if any other red kid plays in a blue game, they get irate. Once, for a tournament, the club mixed red and blue together and had like half and half for two teams in a tournament and both teams lost a game and some of these parents refuse to have their kid even play on a mixed team any so little timmy doesn't have to play with kids who aren't good. Even if a blue player makes a mistake, they get pissed and throw their hands up like wtf is this kid doing.
Blue and red players are in same "pool" so we're all on a single group chat to coordinate games. Parents of blue and red are arguing about why the club seems to focus on blue team and not red etc. One time, a substitute coach had to coach a game and that coach sat on his phone the entire time during the game. Parents complained like you would not believe and one kid's parents didn't let him play in the next game to "punish" the club for the substitute coach's behavior. Like dude, who gives a shit. |

I knew a dude who had four daughters, and all four of them got D1 scholarships in soccer. The amount he spent on travel sports growing up is far less than he would have spent on tuition. And the best one got a full ride at Stanford (where she was an All-American).
But yeah, for 95% of parents, the likelihood that you'll save enough on tuition to justify the money you spend on sports is very low. For boys, it's almost always a waste of money for anything other than football. |

There are two more serious leagues above him, and even still, all these kids have way better soccer skills then him.
He can play because he's probably 95% in speed and effort, but if my younger son was doing it he'd probably have to sit on the bench most of.the game - as a 7 year old - playing rec soccer....
Its kind of wild because I feel like when I grew up even fat and autistic kids could play until like 8th grade and now there are no non serious games starting at age 8. |

For select we only do batting once a week and it's mostly live at bats. I have two kids playing ball, so when one is at practice I'll bring the off-day kid and get 2-3 buckets of balls off of the machine at the facility. That helps dramatically. I should also add that in a place like the pnw an indoor facility is essential, and justifies some of the costs. I see lots of highschool kids there even late on a Friday night. That type of culture is what I'm really going for. I'm not trying to get my kid to MLB. I want him to learn how to handle stress and see that hard work does pay off. |

It's becoming more and more rare for American kids to play professionally coming out of college. In the most recent MLS draft, only 6 total American players were drafted to MLS teams.
That said, for most, playing D1 is the pipe dream and not necessarily being a pro. Even that is becoming increasingly challenging because the rosters are packed with players who went through top European youth academies but didn't make the pro squad. There are now tons of top level academy players who forego playing for their high schools just to end up playing D3 soccer. It's insanely competitive now.

But even at that age it's still not uncommon to see kids playing in the dirt. And travel teams come on various forms and sizes. You're seeing more little league districts putting together all star teams and registering them for tournaments. I think that's a good mix. Little leagues that accommodate travel ball schedules are also more common.
But then you get select teams with indoor basketball courts and weight room staff. The team I posted below has everything. They charge $7k a year and the kid has to sign a contract stating that not only will they NOT play little league but no other sports period. For 11 year olds??? That extreme specialization at such an early age is nuts. Of course that's no comparison to competitive dance which solves the conflict problem by leaving the girls zero free time.

One summer in college wooden bat league this dude from another team played JUCO in the south and went yard 4 times against us in a double header, two of them were against our pitcher from a low level DI who was a stud growing up.
That JUCO guy I looked him up a few years later to see what happened to him. He ended up going to some top DIII and hit like .250 and never did anything.
Puts it into perspective how good guys are when you open it up to the whole country. Now imagine the talent of someone like Bonds lmao. |

Travel ball is driving 100 miles to play in some tournament against similarly shit teams who you could have just played in the next county.
Travel ball gets good when you’re fully developed and now need to see that the world is bigger than your small town. You don’t need to do that at 8 where the biggest kid is going to be hitting bombs but will stop growing at age 13 and end up getting cut from JV. |

But that's a top 0.1% outcome. There are presently only like 195 americans in the NHL. Even to play D1, the vast majority of recruits play junior hockey out of high school before going to college. And the cost to play high level youth hockey is insane. Between equipment, team fees, and extra training these people are spending $30k per year.
i had a really odd conversation with a friend whose kid is a very good U12 hockey player. His approach seemed to be that we should treat these kids like they are all training to become professionals. I walked him through some of the numbers and was like there are 12 top level teams in our state for your kid's age. Each team has 18 kids. Do you really think there are 200+ elite pro level hockey players every year from just our state?
There are only a total of like 1,500 D1 scholarships for hockey and that's across 4 years and only 60% are Americans because they heavily recruit foreigners. So like total each year only like 200 or so graduating high school seniors will end up with a college hockey scholarship.
So in all likelihood each year probably 10% of the "top youth hockey league" will end up with a scholarship and maybe 1 total will ever play in the NHL.
He refused to accept this and insisted all of these kids will play D1 hockey and a large percentage will play professionally.
I think people really underestimate what it takes to be a professional athlete. If a kid isn't absolutely dominating the other best kids at his age, it is extremely unlikely that he will play D1 or be a pro.
The takeaway is that youth sports parents should focus much less on their kid's performance and more on the positive lessons they can learn from participating. |

That means that there is a theoretical maximum of 1,625 D1 hockey scholarships. In practice, the number is almost certainly much less than that. Most schools probably do not award anywhere close to 25 scholarships. If you award a men's scholarship, you have to also award a women's scholarship due to Title IX. In many cases, you have to award multiple women's scholarships because most colleges have more women than men. Plus you can't be competitive in football and men's basketball if you don't use all of your scholarships, and those are the two sports that actually make money. So, at most schools, all men's sports other than football and men's basketball get only a handful of scholarships. I would be very surprised if there are more than 800-900 D1 men's hockey scholarships in the country. It's probably even less than that.
To me, the only way youth hockey makes sense is if the parents have a shit ton of money and they want to increase his chances of landing at a NESCAC school or something. They don't award athletic scholarships, but it's far easier to be admitted as a recruited athlete, and you don't have to be that good to play at the NESCAC level. But then you spend a fortune on hockey (or your other sport of choice) and then spent a fortune on private school tuition at a school that most laypeople have never heard of. The economics only make sense if you are so loaded that you are willing to spend 7 figures so your kid can get a degree from Colby. |

Women's soccer is probably the single biggest beneficiary of Title IX. It's one of the cheapest sports, so if you need to balance men and women's scholarships while spending as little money as possible, a soccer team is one of the best ways to do it. Now nearly every school in the country has a women's soccer team, and most of them have a full set of scholarships.
To be clear, it still probably only makes sense if your kid is exceptionally talented or if money is no object and you want to give her an admissions boost to an Ivy/NESCAC school. But you're not just lighting money on fire like you are with most men's sports.
And yeah, if you're a boy, soccer is a waste of time for college scholarships unless you are Christian Pulisic. Aside from the fact that it has become more competitive, there are less scholarships available as schools cut men's scholarships due to Title IX. |
