Tonight’s highlight was Marge, the elderly kleptomaniac. She shuffles in every few weeks, pockets full of canned tuna, and dares anyone to stop her.
Tabitha refuses to intervene. “She’s 82, Evan. Let her have the goddamn tuna.”
This time, Marge caught me staring. “You think you’re better than me, boy?” she snarled, gripping a can like a weapon. “I know what you’re hiding.”
“What am I hiding?” I asked, mostly out of morbid curiosity.
She leaned in, breath like sour milk. “Everything,” she hissed. “And one day, it’ll all spill out.”
I watched as she shuffled away, disappearing into the darkness beyond the automatic doors.
“Yes, friend,” I said softly. “This is fine.”
