Health care as a percent of GDP is just out of control, and Obamacare is just going to make it worse. There was an opportunity in 2009 for real reform and cost cutting, but it didn't happen. Now what? Will costs ever get under control in our lifetimes?

My mother-in-law is a great example of someone overusing medical care. I think she goes to a medical appointment about twice a week, yet there's nothing significantly wrong with her. Is this common among boomers?

My aunt and her husband have appoints two-three times a month plus tons of random minor procedures requiring physical therapy, all on Medicare. I have no idea of they are legit, but they are boomer scum and need to knock it off.

I just don't get it. I've been to a doctor maybe 4 times in the last decade. What the fuck is wrong with these people? Do I just not get it because I'm not old yet?

See below. Fee-for-service model of Medicare encourages this shit. I wouldn't be surprised if the doctor is telling these people to come in often like this.

A high percentage of these visits are to her shrink/therapist. She's on various psychiatric drugs that, as far as I can tell, haven't really done much for her over the years.

Early detection is the key to stopping many life threatening illnesses. Hence, preventative visits for regularly scheduled tests. Preventative care is meant to save money in the long run by nipping such illnesses in the bud before they can reach the stage where treating them would be way more expensive. You mother in law, too, probably believes this.

You seem to ignore that as ye reap so shall ye so. There is no need for name calling; besides, it weakens your position among the adults. If you make your points calmly and move on, this will get you superior results, provided you are driven by a desire to persuade others. But even if your sole desire is to provide entertainment, insults always will remain a crucial currency of insecure hacks and children, often belying in those who hurl them unresolved emotional or psychological issues.

Consequence of an aging population, bro. Just another thing us youngs have to deal with.

Honestly, unless you have an amazing career going here, I'd strongly recommend you try your best to move overseas and start a new life.

I post this all the time, but its stupid as fuck we don't have more doctors in this country.

We've got a shitton of smart people dying to become doctors and we turn them away because they don't volunteer enough, or they score "too low" on an exam that they scored 5 points higher on than the average black admit.

As I have said countless times before the problem is with the way we look at healthcare to begin with in the US + an over-reliance on costly and exploitative Western systems of medicine which often cause more problems long term than they solve

Having our doctors integrate more holistic and preventive medicine based practices and techniques is a must, but then fewer people would actually get sick so the business side of that profession would begin howling. There is structural rot that needs to be definitively addressed
