fritz lost the US open final and now plays in the atp year end finals, a lesser event. he's never won any event of either caliber.
top tennis reporter tweeted: "He will play for the biggest title of his career tomorrow!"

internet aspies are maf bc they think playing for the us open is playing for a bigger title, and he contends he's correct because fritz lost the us open final.

it journo is technically cr.
however, the purpose of language is to convey information. the journo purposefully choose a headline that anyone could tell would be potentially misunderstood because it's more attention grabbing. sure, *technically* he is *competing* for his most important title because he didn't win a superior competition he competed in. so, the journo is correct in grammatically but wrong if you take a 1000ft view imo.

i think even his 1000 ft view is correct. the atp finals is the 5th most prestigious event after the 4 slams, and is pretty close in prestige. the critical information is that fritz has never won any of the 5 top tier events. if fritz lost 4 wimbledon finals and was playing in the atp finals today, i still think it's important to convey he's playing for the biggest title of his career bc he hasn't won a big title.
