Dude would throw away the lives of thousands of his troops for absolutely nothing. 20,000 dead in futile attacks outside Atlanta. Should have been court martialed after the battle of Franklin - made Pickett's Charge look like a well-planned assault.

It's a widespread suspicion among historians that Hood was trying to punish his army at Franklin for their perceived weaknesses in the earlier attacks he had ordered.

At least Lee's assault at Gettysburg was well-intentioned. I think Lee was just weary of the war and thought that if the South could show that Pickett's Charge was able to work in spite of the Union having all the advantages that they would realize the war was hopeless. Union troops in the Virginia theater had cut and run plenty of times in the past when faced with big Rebel attacks, so it's kind of understandable that Lee would have expected that. No reason at all for Hood to have expected that of the tough Western troops he was fighting.
