I asked this univ if I can submit my law school transcript instead of the diploma to go to a Chinese language course (I dont have the diploma anymore and just a shit photo of it)
This bitch replies but I cannot understand in Google translate if she's saying I must have the diploma. It sounds like it? Or actually she is just repeating what i told her that I can only provide the transcript?

China has a crazy dual credential system in which qualifications and degrees are two different things. She probably thinks your transcript is evidence of a qualification (which is basically a set of courses) but not a degree/diploma. Usually photocopies of diplomas are acceptable so you might try sending her the photo of your diploma. If the photo is really bad you can possibly clean it up with some kind of image processing software.
The alternative is to try to get her to understand that the transcript shows evidence of the degree, but it's probably easier to just send the photo of the diploma if she'll take it. You are most likely dealing with a clerk, so the less thinking you require of her the better, and even if you get through her with the transcript, the next bureaucrat up the line may toss it back.
When in Sichuan, etc.
As always, YMMV.

OK, just freely associating: I think they have the potential to eat our lunch. It is fucking unbelievable how much China has changed in the past 45 years, which is how long I've been paying attention to them. If you just plot the trend, they will eat everybody's lunch, but my ill informed assessment is that they have some real problems that are going to slow them down.
Their educational system is more rigid than ours, and probably produces better results in the aggregate according to tests. Where I think they are weak is in allowing superstars to flourish and in creativity. I know that seems like a stereotype, but I think it's true. There is a reason US universities are full of full tuition paying Chinese.
Also, Chinese organizations have a more pronounced tendency toward bureaucracy and obeisance to hierarchy that is a weakness compared to the US. Moreover, they seem to have more of a problem with creative destruction than does the US.
One of the most striking things to me about China is how they embrace inefficiency in the pursuit of scale, which is a kind of risk, but at the same time they are pretty much risk averse when it comes to new things. They are great at making huge quantities of stuff, but not so great at creating whole new categories of stuff. They spend a shit load of effort stealing ideas from everywhere else, but haven't proven so great at inventing the radically new themselves. I think that's a consequence of their ingrained mercantilism, which has focused for decades on sales and export, and incentivized such.
If the Chinese could overhaul their thinking to allow their geniuses and highly creatives to flourish, combined with their tolerance of inefficiency to achieve scale, they could make some huge breakthroughs. I also think they need to inject some intellectualism into their mercantilism. What I think I mean is that in addition to making stuff to sell, trade and export, they need to learn to create and manufacture just for the fuck of it.
I'm really out of my zone of certainty here and just speculating as best I can based on limited data. Even more damagingly, I don't go there anymore and am badly out of the loop.
