Just looked them up on Spotify, they have a lot more listeners than I would have suspected

I did listen to them back in the day, they didn't strike me as an act with this much staying power

only thing surprising to me is how popular III is. i recall it being considered underwhelming compared to first two at the time.

i have heard the opening to "transgender" in a ton of youtube shorts or tiktoks though so maybe kids get exposed through that

I remember listening to Alice Practice on Myspace in like 2005 and knew it had changed the world and it's not even one of their 20 best songs now imo

they were derivative of multiple other acts from like-minded scenes (as well as directly ripping off numerous well worn synthpop electro clash moves that are decades old and the equivalent of a three chord pop song in terms of ubiquity) and just better at marketing/got lucky. they have no real legacy other than millenial nostalgia, didn’t break any ground, and they have no notable songs. because gen Z practices a form of pop culture necromancy whereby most of their ‘creatives’ just recycle old acts whole cloth, it was inevitable they’ll have a moment when the people who listened to them as 13-year-olds realized enough time had gone by that it’s acceptable to pick at the bones again. accumulated streams isn’t a legacy, it just means name recognition and algorithm captures when people set up ‘2000s electronic’ streaming channel criteria or whatever. they’re an act that is almost exclusively liked by people who don’t care about music much but like to have something blasting in the car or at the gym.

a lot of electroclash/electronic stuff prior to CC sounded kind of boring or extremely repetitive. only a handful like royksopp were doing catchier/poppier stuff. CC basically applied the formula but with pop production and hooks, instead of doing yet another autechre-style slog through computer noises.

Right place/right time. Just catchy enough music around bleeps and bloops that sound like NES soundtracks hadn’t broken through before this. Others did it better before and after. They could clean up doing a summer of festivals if they reformed.

I feel the same way about Postal Service tbh
