Hard to know. There are lots of breast biopsies and I'd think the association between spread and biopsy would be obvious if that was the case. But then I've seen cases of renal cancers where recurrence is along the resection tract. And in colorectal cancers the first site to look for recurrence is the anastamosis.

Bad news is that it's not just biopsy. There's evidence that surgical excision of tumors can encourage metastasis of any tiny bits left over. But surgeons don't like being told not to cut.

Sure. As long as he gets every patch of cells a hundred times smaller than anything that could be seen with the naked eye he'll have a clean edge.

With all these clean edges, weird that JAMA publishes a randomized trial in 2022 that showed that SLN biopsy alone seems to perform just as well as the more invasive complete dissection. Strange case.
