is there any point in paying an ER bill?

A couple of thoughts:
1. I wouldn’t do this by phone or email. I’d do it by mail.
2. I wouldn’t say things like “this debt is extinguished.”
3. Yes, this is basically how this is done. I don’t write it on the memo line. I wrote my settlement language on the amount line, this way someone who only scans the back of checks and the memo line is less likely to catch it.

1. Ok boomer. Email = solid date and time stamped record with no ambiguity as to whether it was received.
2. Ok.
3. Shrewd. I just sent it via bill pay.

1. Rates may come down in 7+ years, but they won’t come down anytime soon, and credit will probably remain too expensive for any non-poor to consider.
2. Lower credit score likely has no bearing on whether you can open new credit cards.
3. The big signup bonuses are going away in the credit card game. So that’s no longer a justification for the cards. Look up some Clark Howard videos for Christ’s sake.
4. Yes, all things considered, a lower credit score is less desirable than a higher one, but the question is, is that worth spending $10k on some fraud medical bill that the quack doctor’s quack administrator sent you and that’s made up out of thin air? Or would you rather handle the bill, save $9,900, never have it touch your credit report, and maybe get a few hundred bucks back when the medical debt collector inevitably fucks up?
Myopically focusing on credit report and credit score is what poors do. There’s a bigger picture that you should be aware of.

At the very least call and ask for a discount if you just pay it.
My hospital gives me 20% off.
Also I had a bill go to collections because I was disputing it, and the collections people were like "If you give us $500 we'll just close it out."
The whole thing is a complete scam.
