It is possible that a band that came out with something truly groundbreaking could make it. Tame Impala was the last artistic-minded rock group to make it really big. He came out of Western Australia and was pretty isolated. He made his first impactful album in 2010 and his last in 2015. Now he hangs out with Kanye and Bieber, does drugs every night per his own admission, and before Covid was spending time in Malibu while his wife rubbed shoulders with the California coastal elites. His latest album was a total flop.
Before that, the next closest band to break through was Alt-J, who had perhaps the most stunning debut record by an alternative rock act of all time. However, fame got to them, they immediately lost their most important musical contributor, and the remaining members never made it back to the mountaintop. They have now transitioned into small business owners back in the UK.
The last artistic American alternative rock act to break through to mainstream success were The White Stripes. After a series of early albums the magic was gone, and Jack became an empresario and entrepreneur, aging into a blues-roots nostalgia act. While he did write some memorable songs, he never achieved the artistic pinnacle of the artistic rock ensemble. The Commonwealth nations still dominate the USA in this domain.
The reasons for this are largely cultural. It would take a long time to explain, but simply put, there aren’t very many people with a high degree of original musical and songwriting talent who choose to forgo mainstream acceptance in the LA monoculture that dominates. One could argue that someone like Sonny Moore or Anton Zaslavski, or even Martin Sandberg and Johan Schuster would in another dimension become world-renowned for their art and originality in a rock format. The temptation of making huge amounts of money and gaining global play by being extremely blue-pilled is too high. It would require a based folk hero to rise up and stick it to the man, but our culture is so soft and most of the population so lost that the odds are slim.
