Its gone from that to some unrecognizable travesty in a matter of a few years. Seems like it was always the same before the Longhorn Network came around. Changed everything.

Just looked it up on Wikipedia. What was the Longhorn Network? Just a way for UTexas to show swimming and other events on their own CCTV network? Why would that destry college football?

yes. U Texas got paid like $200mm a year to have their own network. I don't know anyone who watched it, and yes it highlighted shit like UT swimming and stuff.

It started the trend of ridiculous money being thrown at individual schools (later to trickle to players) for shit that made no sense.

It kept seeming "inevitable" that UT football would become great again -- like, even to neutral parties like ESPN talking heads unconnected to the university; I'm sure within longhorn nation it was 10x worse.

Then the team strung together over a dozen high-teens to 20s finishes in a row.

TBF they waited too long to fire Mack Brown when he was clearly not up to the job anymore, and then they made two very bad hires and throughout they recruited a bunch of terrible 5 stars who should have been 3 stars but for their Texas offers, and then overlooked 3 stars who went undrafted and then succeeded in the NFL despite going to Texas. It was a historically and comically bad waste of immense resources. It’s not an accident that they are back on top now that they have a reasonably competent actual P5 level head coach. The last one of those they had was Mack in 2008, mainly because he let his assistants do all the player development, scouting, game planning and recruiting dirty work and his job was to schmooze boosters, guest star on Friday Night Lights, and occasionally play closer with a big recruit who had parents that were likely to buy into his bullshit CEO coach schtick.

Every UT fan I knew spent that season (what was it, 2013?) praying that the wheels would fall off entirely just so the school would finally fire him. This despite the fact that, IIRC, they notched a huge win that season, against maybe OU? (it was someone who's both a rival and was top-ranked).

Mack Brown and Phillip Fulmer (sp?) at the other UT are my go-to examples of how college coaching is a better gig than NFL coaching: you become an institution of your own in CFB and build loyalty or whatever and then don't get fired even after years upon years of mediocrity or worse. In the NFL (except pittsburgh), dudes 3 years out from a superbowl win get canned.

2013, yes, and they were actually 8-4 and 7-2 in the Big 12 (lol at that SPS conference). They got smashed by BYU and Ole Miss in non-conference, but it was a classic year (like last year) where one team was up and the other was down, but you throw out the records the second Saturday in October. OU crushed Bama in the Sugar Bowl that year.

I know there is this one poaster who hates Sark, presumably a USC or UW fan, which is dumb because he had flashes of excellence in both places. But are you aware that 1) he was a raging alcoholic through that entire period at UW and USC culminating in him being fired mid season and his marriage breaking up, 2) he was the OC and architect of Bama’s offensive transformation after their period of underperformance in the 2010s relative to their main contenders for championships in the SEC and the natty, ie Georgia, Clemson and tOSU? Ask Bama fans if Sark is a good coach. If he doesn’t consistently make the playoff at Texas it will be because of his DC/defensive coaching staff, who are somewhat suspect as both recruiters and game planners.

You can draw a direct line from the BCS, which was simultaneously a completely idiotic way to name a champion and avoid a playoff and a great way to get massive publicity and attention on CFB. It also coincided with a string of very marketable stars and epic championship games beginning with Miami (who then lost to tOSU as big favorites), then handing off to USC (who then lost the greatest CFB game of all time to VY) and then the utter farce that was 2008 that killed it and set up the equally retarded four team playoff, which was a massive unfair advantage for the SEC and B1G champions. So we basically spent 25 years with a retarded half assed playoff that generated tons of interest and attention because it was so obviously a structurally shitty and unfair system. And in the meantime fantasy football was pushing the NFL to new heights and making NFL fans more interested in college football as the NFL minor leagues.

Longhorn Network was the reaction of one massive CFB brand that was blatantly screwed by the BCS and then its conference was screwed (and all members therefore lost money) because of the four team playoff. Longhorn Network was a very stupid and ineffective long term plan, but if you were a 70-something AD who wanted to max out revenue to your school short term in the late 00s/early 10s, an unholy alliance with ESPN was a smart move to respond to the abject idiotic fuckery of the NCAA, the bowl commissioners and the conference bosses (the Big 12’s moron leader most of all). Any other school in the same position would’ve done the same thing.

CR. BCS worked perfectly for the second time in seven tries that year. And yet you literally had Obama making MNF appearances two years later calling for it to be abolished in the middle of campaign season, and then that year culminated in the all time epic screw job. Hail the greatest CFB game of all time, and fuck the BCS.

imo these 'schools' need to be forced to spin off these pro sports teams they run as wholly owned subs to third parties. sell the ip, sell the record books, lease the stadium. threaten their tax exemption, withhold their grants, stop subsidizing their students' loans--until they stop raking in 100s of millions from running pro franchises as a side hustle.

hopefully, then, actual collegiate football, played by student athletes, with a regional character, will reemerge. until it gets huge and gets pozzed again in 80 years.

lol yeah right. ESPN hasn’t even launched its proper direct to consumer streaming app yet. CFB is the massive sword of Damocles hanging over the cable business and in the fall of 2025 every cable company gets its head chopped off.

Over ranking SEC frauds has tarnished the last decade, but it feels like the game is coming back.

The CA schools flying to the east coast will be dumb, but it’s their own fault for hiring a retard commissioner and being so clueless for so long during the last round of conference realignment. But obvious CR overall to any real CFB fan. If you are a real CFB fan who doesn’t just watch your team and you genuinely enjoy big games between the blue bloods that typically define a season, then you had a raging boner when you first saw the 2024 schedules. Every CFB podcast blew up about it last spring. There are all these random weeks in October now when the “big game” that week used to be the 3rd and 4th best teams in a P5 playing each other and now it’s UGA Texas and Bama Tenn.
