Why are parents these days so strict with their kids' screen time?

prolonged screen time is actually a symptom of neurodivergence
In this study, children <40 months of age showed different trajectories of daily screen time over time. Additionally, ASD-PRS was associated with medium and long screen time during the observation period. This raises the possibility that long screen time is not a cause of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but rather an early symptom that ASD individuals are more attracted to objects than to people.

its called brainrot for a reason
dexters lab or whatever is basically war and peace compared to the slop kids watch on youtube shorts/tiktok. it really is lowest common denominator (now largely ai generated) garbage. everything is designed for maximum attention grabbing
more importantly it's a sea of infinite distraction. for the vast majority of kids there was only so much TV you can watch before you get bored, but you can toss a tablet at a kid anywhere at any time and they will find a way to occupy themselves.

You actually had to follow the plot for the cartoons we watched.
Batman: The Animated Series;
Power Rangers;
Power Puff Girls
Each show was 22 minutes broken up over commercial breaks with a cogent plot kids had to use their brains to follow.
The shit on YouTube now is just non-stop brainrot. You literally could sit for 24 hours and never watch the same episode twice.
Does anybody know what country NASTYA is from?

When Cartoon Network premiered, I thought I had died on gone to heaven as a kid.
24-HOUR CARTOONS!?!
Granted, they were mostly retreads of Hanna-Barbara cartoons and shit, but it was still mind-blowing to be able to watch cartoons at any hour of the day.
But even with cartoon network, I only watched certain cartoons for a certain period of time. I didn't sit there and watch non-stop episodes of "SWAT KATZ". My brain had to take a break because I didn't want to watch some dumbass episode of "Birdman"

Posters here seemed to have nailed it.
If my kids are watching full length feature movies with plot and themes, I'm thrilled. If they're watching cartoons that's fine. I get annoyed when they start watching "Is It Cake" for the 20th time. But we limit the amount of Youtube type bullshit they watch to like 10 minutes before bed (which is by far their favorite).
Same thing with video games. If they're playing a Pokemon RPG or something on the TV i think that's actually good, if they're playing some candy crush for kids type bullshit on their tablets its a problem.
Their behavior validates this as well.
