Basically the only survival option for a Waffen SS soldier on the eastern front was to get injured badly enough to get sent home. Few of them surrendered and, of the few that did, the Russians made sure basically no SS ever returned to Germany. Even the end of the Waffen SS at the Halbe Pocket outside of Berlin was horrific- they were chewed up by Russian massed artillery tree-bursting in the forests around them.
Some of the final SS troops defending the Reichstag were actually French troops from the SS Charlemagne brigade. |
