Without doing that, Moskowitz believes “some of these places are gonna become too expensive for the people who already live there, including seniors, by the way, who have retired and live in communities.”

The national flood insurance program is bad enough. People in risky areas should be charged the full actuarial cost of living in their shitty place. And yes, that will mean that many people in Florida are going to get fucked by $10k+/yr home insurance. Oh well, maybe they shouldn’t live in Florida.
I am doing cartwheels thinking about the property price declines there with this and all the condo fees that are now being charged. Tons of boomers are going to end up with nothing, lmao.

certainly a better path than offering them subsidized reinsurance so they can continue to live directly in the path of hurricanes. i would rather the entire state be gassed before that happens.

If only Florida collected a tax from its residents that could be used to ease the costs of living in a shithole skin tag of land hanging off the rest of the country, smack in the middle of hurricane land. Call it an “income tax” or something.

yes, everyone who causes global warming should pitch in for the consequences to coastal florida homes, as well as the homes of 3 billion people in other risk zones

The reason Governors declare state emergencies is because it allows federal dollars to be spent on disaster relief and recovery. So taxpayers in Iowa are footing the bill for hurricanes and taxpayers in Florida are footing the bill for tornados. So the risk is already spread around
What I think is bullshit is that the Fedgov backs home mortgages for middle class to buy property in Florida with the requirements that the homes be insured but then there are zero private companies willing to cover said homes in Florida. Either remove the insurance requirements or force the private companies like AllState and Nationwide to write policies everywhere and not just low risk states.

Why do we need to make it easy to get home loans for people who live in disaster prone areas? Making it more expensive or difficult to live there seems like good government policy.

Because people already live there?
There are like 50+ million homes that are at risk over the next 50 years due to sea level rise and climate change (flooding, wildfires, etc.). If we're going to reassess which homes FannyMae will back based on generalized environmental risk factors, then fine but just to isolate that risk to hurricane seems unfairly targeted.

I don’t think hurricane risk should be singled out. It should be based on whatever the private insurance industry decides is worth covering. Those people in wildfire prone areas of California that insurers don’t want? Fuck them too. Forcing carriers to cover them simply drags this problem on and shifts the cost to others.
