1. I wouldn’t do this by phone or email. I’d do it by mail.

3. Yes, this is basically how this is done. I don’t write it on the memo line. I wrote my settlement language on the amount line, this way someone who only scans the back of checks and the memo line is less likely to catch it.

Yes, all things considered, a lower credit score is less desirable than a higher one, but the question is, is that worth spending $10k on some fraud medical bill that the quack doctor’s quack administrator sent you and that’s made up out of thin air? Or would you rather handle the bill, save $9,900, never have it touch your credit report, and maybe get a few hundred bucks back when the medical debt collector inevitably fucks up?

Also I had a bill go to collections because I was disputing it, and the collections people were like "If you give us $500 we'll just close it out."
