Man dies after being shot in Marbella
National Police are investigating a new shooting in Marbella (Málaga, population 159,000). Shortly after the noon hour, a man shot another man he encountered at an outdoor terrace in the New Andalucia area, close to the Banús marina. As a consequence, the victim, a Swedish man, was wounded and taken to the Sun Coast hospital, where he died. The perpetrator of the shooting, also Swedish, fled in a car, but was captured shortly afterwards, according to police sources.
The events took place around 2:35 on Friday afternoon. Several people called the 112 emergency services number reporting that a man had arrived in a car, approached the terrace of a business on José Banús Avenue - close to the marina of the same name - and had fired numerous gunshots. Afterwards, the shooter fled in a car.
The main theory of the case is that of score-settling between Swedish drug trafficking gangs, confrontations which have led to a number of incidents on the Sun Coast in recent years. The latest being the arrest of a 16-year-old minor who had traveled to Marbella to commit a murder, but who was detained before carrying out the act.
Several emergency services officers were deployed to the zone - which has seen several shootings in the past few years - where a 25-year-old man was found wounded inside of a bar, where he had taken refuge after being struck in the leg. Following an initial assessment, emergency workers took him by ambulance to the Sun Coast hospital, where he was admitted and ultimately died.
Several patrols from the Marbella local police and the National Police also arrived, and took charge of the investigation. Several agents with police forensics surveyed the site of the incident, which remained taped off throughout the day. The agents quickly organized an effort to locate the vehicle in which the alleged shooter had escaped. And, a bit later, a 38-year-old Swedish man was located and arrested, according to police sources. Though the investigation remains preliminary, the main hypothesis is that of a fight between drug gangs located on the Sun Coast.
Last Thursday, Marbella's National Police commissioner José Manuel Rando noted the existence of "certain isolated incidents of public gun violence" in a speech given to commemorate the patron saint of the security force. "The prevention of such behavior and dissuading their commission is a chief police priority," according to Málaga Today.
"However, if events take place which come to threaten peaceful coexistence with mortal danger to people, there will be response without delay, with zero tolerance from the National Police and its special units, with immediacy and force. And the perpetrators will be immediately identified and pursued wherever they are found, detained, and put before the judicial system," he emphasized while giving a positive assessment of the Sun Coast Plan, placed into effect in March of 2024 to re-enforce security following a wave of shootings which shook Málaga's coast.
"It has been quite effective, bringing about an active police presence and a considerable improvement in the objective and subjective safety of the city," he noted.
