It was escalated unnecessarily by the prole employee. Not sure what he thought he'd accomplish by stepping on the debit card. I've seen these type of situations and NEVER get involved. Who cares if some spic is stealing a pint of ice cream or whatever. Cops won't come without a threat of violence, and loss prevention couldn't care less. I worked with a dumb black kid who pursued a bum down the street over stolen candy or some shit. He got fired, not flame.
