It seems like every complete tard these days is into "cyber security" where they rack up "certifications" from lots of different companies that sell prep kits and charge for exams. Otherwise these people worked at Dominoes or Walmart while doing technical college diplomas.

Most of these "cyber security" companies employing these people seem like they only exist because the board has disabled veterans with University of Phoenix degrees and can therefore secure fraud contracts from the US gov or other companies obligated to throw money to DEI or veteran orgs.

There is also almost zero overlap between these people and e.g. FAANG software engineers with CS degrees. From what I can tell these people don't really write code or do System Design, it's more like being a technician using software tools written by actually competent people.

What's going on with this "industry"?

Huge demand for a service where the barrier to entry is trchnical expertise. Basically an unregulated medical industry so there are bound to be a lot of snake oil salesmen. Few have the technical chops to call out the bs.

How much expertise is involved in downloading "pen testing" tools and running them in your "box"?

Why is this field not dominated by people with legitimate CS backgrounds? The modal "cybersecurity expert" has an associate's degree from a community college or a 4 year degree from Devry

Probably not a lot but if it turns up a bunch of vulnerabilities, who cares if the guy administering it was previously a Walmart greeter?

It doesn't matter where they came from, but if the barriers to entry are this low, why isn't this field overrun by smart people?

anybody with actual chops in this area is doing legit research. the actual packaging up their insights into software doesnt require that many people, and it can be used by mostly retarded people

John McAfee was the most famous and successful "cyber security" expert ever, and he was an insane drug addict pervert so that should tell you something right there.

not true, the ftc generally won't accept an attestation for companies that are under a consent decree from someone w/o a cissp or csslp depending on the concern the company was jammed up for.

certs are also tablestakes for most gov/cyber roles

Most cybersecurity is CYA, companies want to say "ok we did something here" to avoid negligence so they just hire these frauds to look over their systems and stuff.

Cr. Lots of govt spending too. The funny part is the notion that any personal info like ss#s and such have any value. Cyber bros laugh at that. You're shit has been stolen and bought and sold a million times over.

nobody steals personal info anymore, just small time hackers. that is low hanging fruit. the real paydays involve crippling and holding hostage national and global systems. to prevent this, companies will hire and provide blank checks and unlimited budgets. if you can make it to a CSO seat, you can write your own ticket.
