Look at Michigan’s win over USC. People are like “yeah, but, they did it by rushing.” If they had won by passing no one would be questioning it.

A win is a win, the point of the critique is that a team that can't pass has a lot less margin for error on the defensive side. Running by its nature doesn't stop the clock as much, which means running teams rarely score points quickly. So if they fall behind substantially (say 2-3 touchdowns) they have two choices and both of them are bad-- they can either run and chew up too much clock, probably not having enough time to catch up or they can switch to the pass which they're bad at, which probably will not work.

This is much less true of teams that are good at passing but bad at rushing-- if they want to switch to chewing up clock, it doesn't take any skill to run, run, run, punt and even one first down will get a new set of downs to chew up yet more clock.

Bringing this back to Michigan, they're frauds because if they fall behind they have no way to catch up.

But they didn’t fall behind. They jumped out to a 14-0 lead over USC on two long rushing TDs and people still act like their win was fraud because it was based on rushing yards and rushing TDs instead of passing.

Criticizing Michigan is more about projecting their ability to win future games. A win is a win in the stat books, how you get there matters a lot in evaluating how good your team actually is. Michigan will fall behind and get fucked when faced with a better team, book it done. They will get fucked by at least Oregon and Ohio State, but possibly more than that.

Nothing is wrong with winning by rushing. But a team that can't pass, which Michigan seemingly can't, has severe disadvantages for reasons that have already been explained to you. A non-passing team is not a realistic candidate for a championship in the modern era.

This doesn't exist or at least not in the same way. Even a team that's horrible at rushing can kill the clock if they need to-- their RB can at least run it three times for a yard or two or they can do simple high percentage passes to the flat and stay in bounds, etc. A pass orientated team can switch to killing the clock if they need to. A team that can only rush can't switch to a high speed offense if they need to. A team that can't pass will win games, but they cannot win a championship in the modern era.

the spread at kickoff was USC by 4.5 points. most observers thought there were two real possibilities:

- usc has a lot of success passing and wins by a lot

- in a close, hard-fought game, usc wins by a little

turns out it was a close game but michigan won by a little

to answer your question, people doubt michigan because they don't seem to be able to pass AT ALL. the pass protection is weak, the receivers aren't getting open, and the current qb has a very limited ability to read a defense.

last year michigan could pass (and do it really well) but chose to be conservative and chew clock on offense by running a lot. no one doubted that team.

not exactly what you’re asking but imo for the college game some of the disapproval is that athletic teams with top recruits have a natural advantage in the trenches and can win with a run game that isn’t even good, it just works because the O line can create multiple huge holes without any sophisticated scheming or anything. you end up with runners running all over lesser competition and it’s just kind of shitty to watch.

wtf are you trying to get at? usc's defense was abysmal the last few years but has taken some significant steps forward this year. they're still not great and mistake prone. michigan was one of their worst match ups of the year and they played pretty well in a tough environment. usc could still run the table.

michigan's win still isn't that impressive

Football is a complex game that relies a lot on trickery and misdirection.

If you look at the total amount of all the things a football offense can do, passing is probably 70% and running is at most 30%. And the optimal defense against those 30% looks pretty similar.

So if you're only running the ball, yeah you can beat a team if you have vastly better talent/execution - but it's like a pitcher who only has a great fastball.

As a major leaguer he can probably strike out most minor leaguers. But it's not going to be great when the other team has major leage hitters, and your major league hitter is up against a pitcher with that same great fastball, plus a curve, plus a change up, plus a slider.

There's a chance you can beat them with just a fast ball - but any hitter is going to tell you that fast ball is a lot easier to hit when you know its the only pitch coming.
