We also test for evidence of pre-trends between treated/control states and find none. … Second, several measures of excessive debt increase substantially. We find a roughly 28% increase in bankruptcies and an 8% increase in debt transferred to debt collectors. Similarly, auto loan delinquencies increase substantially as does use of debt consolidation loans. Interestingly, we find that banks restrict access to credit on average in affected states. Credit card limits decrease and the ratio of secured to unsecured loans increases. After three years post-legalization we actually find a decrease in credit card delinquencies as a result.

The negative effects on investment are large relative to the sample mean. The average household invests about $380 a quarter so a $53 decrease in investment is a loss of 14%. These negative effects are concentrated among the top few percentiles of bettors and especially the biggest bettors who were already financially constrained by low incomes, debt, and bank overdrafts.
and it even probably increases domestic violence:

not sure what can be done about it at this point. allowing gambling on phones is a disaster for the prole brain.

Wait, wait, wait. The average household invests $380 a quarter? As in $1,520 a year? That's too low to be credible, this paper must be flawed somehow

average, not median
didn't read so idk what the selection population for that is, but if it's everyone, consider that a huge percentage of households invest $0
this estimate might even be high

My hot take is that sports betting will fizzle out as a mainstream thing. Sort of like the poker boom where the fad ended and only the die-hards are left.
The industry pushes parlays that never win…that will turn off casuals who like to win, even if it’s a small amount. And on the off chance you make smart bets and actually win a lot, the books can and do throttle your action, which pisses off the more “sharp” segment of the market.

I think the fact that a lot of these people are watching the games anyway and it's so easy to do on your phone should maintain interest longer than poker. Not many gamblers want to go online to play 1-2 NL against a table full of people with low VPIPs. that isn't fun.

CR. Proles will have a car they "can't" fix and spend $200 on lotto scratchers. I can only imagine what they'll do with sports betting. It's worse because even the prolest prole knows that the lotto is pure chance, but proles frequently think they're sports experts because they've seen a lot of sports, so can delude themselves into thinking it's not really gambling, they're trading on insider knowledge.
