the average american still puts their individual interests ahead of any sort of broader collective good. it's not commendable, but it's understandable.
at the end of the day, it's very obvious that the economy trumps all: in this case though, despite a "goldilocks" landing and an all-time high stockmarket, the "average joe" was still smarting from groceries being 20% higher than they used to be and were looking for someone with tangible ("common sense") solutions to this issue.
in short, america is still very much in the politics of me over we, and it would seem that true social progress can only come immediately after times of great prosperity.

I agree wholeheartedly that people want "clean water, safe neighborhoods, good incomes and a house." That people want "the building blocks of success and a happy life". I would add that they also want physical health and to not have to ever worry about becoming abjectly destitute (the "basic things" you refer to).
but taking the purist capitalist approach that "people solve their own problems" assumes that there are no bad actors in the world (corporate or otherwise) and that everyone has an inherently equal chance of enjoying the "happy life" you describe. so this is where our opinions diverge, for two reasons: 1/ the reality that capitalism has many rough edges that require softening so as not to create the types of extreme equality that inspire revolution and 2/ that, fundamentally, i'm of the belief that everyone should be entitled to enjoy those "basic things" such as food, education, health care and a roof over their head, and that a society in which prosperity comes not at the expense of the state but rather at the expense of the majority of the population is a fundamentally deficient society.

a few billionaires convinced a bunch of retarded latino men that the economy was better under Trump (which is arguably correct for the vast majority of Americans).
now their families are gonna get deported.
