I think libs were traumatized by 80s and 90s jocks who had cool as fuck compact trucks. I had one my sophomore year with a stick shift and would skip school with this half japanese girl in it and just drive around endlessly while listening to limp bizkit cause gas was like $1 per gallon and you could get a full meal from Wendy's for $3 and that had to make libs absolutely irate.

The Ford Maverick is the closest thing size-wise to the great compact trucks of old. But it's not body-on-frame, so that is a deal breaker to many. You can find decent deals on 2010 - 2011 Ford Rangers if you're willing to look (and possibly ship one to you.) And if you spend $300 - $500, you can upgrade the infotainment and make it feel a lot newer.

Definitely seems like there is a big opportunity for a true compact truck again, though bullshit safety regulations have made it tougher. And consumer sentiment has become basically retarded.

The Maverick isn't just "not body on frame. It's basically a crossover SUV with a bed. It's FWD based AWD. Like a ridgeline.

also a new Ranger is quite a bit narrower than a 90s F150 imo

like the bronco emerging as a huge hit when people thought there was only room for jeeps in the body on frame suv market, i think theres a bigger untapped demand for this than automakers realize

internet posters are obsessed with body on frame. a lot of Jeeps like the cherokee/grand cherokee are unibody and still pretty truck like imo.

also the current expedition, tahoe etc are "body on frame," it's not a tiny niche or something.

if you wanted a marty mccfly 4x4 your option from like the 90s til the bronco was a jeep.

That’s kind of dumb imho because any 4x4 is decent off-road, and many may or may not have a locking rear differential of some sort.

dont remember the precise details OP but it has to do with emissions and footprint (wheelbase and track width) basically the bigger the footprint the easier CO2 targets become while small pickups like the old Ranger have targets almost impossible to meet with a profitable engine and decent haul/tow capacity. small "trucks" like the Maverick squeak through because they're unibody transgender hybrid crossovers on car platforms.
