It tries to be too many things. It's a Tom Cruise vehicle, it's a mind bendy sci fi thriller, it's a sappy romance movie, it's a snap shot of pop culture of its time. It's actually extraordinary in its ambition and it's wild that it got made. It contains countless references to obscure rock bands, something that would never happen today. It portrays the wealthy elite as people obsessed with high art and culture. It's also some kind of weird bromance film. It sets up so much that's cool and original, and even if Cruise is too corny to pull off every scene, it's still reaching for something spectacular. It's like a hitter that goes up to the plate and only takes big swings even if he strikes out a lot. It's a wonder that something so weird and off the wall got made at all. It's also triumphantly Gen X. Everything about it is Gen X to the hilt. I think they should have ditched the source material and just made a more coherent movie. If it were 10% better it would have been as famous as Fight Club. It's borderline definitive despite its obvious flaws. Just be thankful it got made at all. Virtually every element of the film is banned by today's Hollywood culture. Rich powerful white men who sleep with lots of hot women and aren't the bad guy. Yeah right lol.

It somehow works imo. That scene where good vibrations is playing and tom cruise is running around screaming is 180. The use of everything in its right place at the beginning was great too.

I saw this movie in the year 2001 in a theater on the west side of Houston.. that was the last time I've been inside a movie theater.. at the time I was living with my wife on the Houston west side and I heard that this movie was about the practice of cryonics, where people preserve their brains after they die ..I was interested because i myself at the time and currently had a cryonic contract for my own brain preservation after death. And so I was very interested in seeing the movie.. my wife and I both went to the movie and I smuggled in a jar of olives.. we each had to pay $10 to get in and my wife thought that was very expensive and she still to this day remembers it and still brings up the the fact that I paid $10 each go see a crappy movie.. I don't even remember what the movie was about but I don't think cryonics was a major part of it.. as someone mentioned above it was a very ambitious but disjointed movie.. and now I am retired and living in a High Desert Arizona City known for consumption of methamphetamines.. and there's the rat gnawing on the wood in my wall this morning, as per usual

it sucks, it's got that cameron crowe residue where you can tell the self-indulgent, self-pitying main character is actually the director himself. and it's got a middling gen-x soundtrack that also fits its oblivious, tasteless gen-x director. penelope cruz is hot.

Btw Cameron Diaz has an odd looking 90s face and skinny body, its hard to believe she was a sex symbol, today she'd work in HR or jew day care somewhere.
