agreed. wire is 180. saying it was bottom tier is just tryhard faggotry.

also, and i say this as someone whose favorite show of all time is sopranos, comparing the wire to shakespeare would probably be more apt. it delved into characters' motivations with a pretty large amount of subtlety and commented on society at large without making it obvious it was doing so - like shakespeare.

you got some of that from sopranos, but not shakespeare level.

i think sopranos is just as close to shakespeare, maybe moreso, because its much narrower. the wires analysis of society is something that can't be tackled in one play, it had to be a long running series. maybe the histories are closest to the wire, but that's a retelling, whereas the wire is an analysis of problems occurring when it was made. which is very hard to do well in a way that stands the test of time.

sopranos is probably the most entertaining show ever and a very interesting character study, at least of tony (paulie walnuts and little carmine, etc are just retards with zero depth).

as much as i love the show, it's a bit surface level entertainment. what is its commentary on society at large? i don't see a whole lot. i still think sopranos is way better than the wire, but i don't see it as being as deep.

i think the issues examined by the wire are applicable to society at large. the political system (and how power corrupts), labor unions, the education system, etc. makes me think shakespeare much more than sopranos.

HBO circa 2000s did everything right. Also just saying Fuck and it having no commercials in 1999 gave it a cachet that still influences people’s perceptions today imo.

No it won’t. Mob genre is too crowded, it’ll never surpass the godfather trilogy or for that matter Goodfellas in any serious critical estimation. It’s a great show don’t get me wrong.

Gandolfini is way better in the role than any single actor in those Films. He IS that guy and it shows on the screen. Deniro is a boomer saint so it’s sacrilege but it’s true imo.

Godfather makes the mobsters seem too civilized imo, Michael is some sort of ingenious businessman and it’s a great story iirc but I don’t buy it. It’s also one of those things with boomer hype behind it independent of how good it is. The boomer hype has subsided. Every normie/Woman whom I’ve shown it to has been like 😴 or 😔. Same people can get through 2001 or The Good the Bad and the Ugly nbd. Imho its not passed the test of time for the retard masses anyway.

Not trying to be a dick

Just my opinion

But

I think you’re not accounting for how Sopranos is a tv show so you spend more time with the characters and relate to them more. The best part of Sopranos is not the dramatic stuff but just watching them hang out and talk shit. Like the scene where they find out Vito is a homo. You can’t really get that in a film cause there’s not enough time to spend 20 minutes on something like that. Godfather has to be serious all the time cause there is so much plot to get through. Goodfellas is somewhere in the middle cause there is a lot of just hanging out, which is why it’s more beloved/rewatchable than Godfather despite being technically not as good.

Godfather is a pretentious (and jewish) midwit work that dresses very mundane plot elements like Michael murdering everyone in 1 with pomp and gravitas to provoke an illusion of intrigue and sophistication. it's a joke.

Goodfellas is largely on par with Sopranos

This is what I alluded to upthread imo

But if you’re a Loser then you see yourself in the prodigal Loser son in Michael becoming a High Loser. Realizing that everyone around him sucks — Fredo the retard and Sonny the Scumbag just fuck everything up — and he needs to stop caring about liberal arts and become man he was always meant to be. The father that took him for a Loser coming to see what he’s really made of.

The extreme pretentiousness and the way it Insists on itself is what leads up the the greatest ending in the history of Film. The murder of all the other families’ heads only became possible because they collectively underestimated Michael. Making deals behind his back, smiling at his father’s funeral. Exactly the type of shit someone would pull on a Loser. “Guy is a joke.” Yeah ok….. champ.
