1) Cold Turkey
2) AA
3) Rehab either followed by AA or not
Ways that are not good:
1) Moderation
2) Naltrexone
3) Antabuse
4) Taking breaks, such as Dry January
The singular difference between real alcoholics and heavy drinkers is that alcoholics can, over any length of time, drink zero or drink more. A heavy drinker can, over time, drink zero, drink less, drink the same, or drink more.

Or they like alcohol more.
Or they hate their life more.
There are simple explanations that don't hand wave at "compulsions"

im glad aa exists and can convince some people to stop drinking but this distinction is ridiculous.
i doubt many, if anyone, drank progressively more every single day before declaring themselves an alcoholic and never drinking again. did you? im sure before going to as you had attempts at tapering or taking a break that were somewhat successful. you certainly didn't consume more ethanol in an unbroken upward trend until you quit.
what happens when an alcoholic relpases? they don't consume the most alcohol they've ever consumed before and continue that trend until they quit again.

Meditation and shrooms stopped my moderate drinking completely. This wasn’t really the objective but happened accidentally. Improved emotional regulation and the equanimity that both tend to cultivate will diminish most desires. And yes, that’s preferable to normal existence.

From the big book of AA: Here are some of the methods we have tried: Drinking beer only, limiting the number of drinks, never drinking alone, never drinking in the morning, drinking only at home, NEVER HAVING IT IN THE HOUSE, never drinking during business hours, drinking only at parties, switching from scotch to brandy, drinking only natural wines, agreeing to resign if ever drunk on the job, taking a trip, not taking a trip, swearing off forever (with and without a solemn oath), taking more physical exercise, reading inspirational books, going to health farms and sanitariums, accepting voluntary commitment to asylums - we could increase the list ad infinitum. -p. 34

“Alcoholism” and other addictions become problems because they take over your life. The best way to get over an addiction is to get back to a disciplined way of life where you’re focused on setting and attaining goals and other things in your life than the addiction. The worst way is to just obsess about the it and go down some hate spiral. Once you have a balanced life you don’t even want it anymore and wonder how the addiction even happened.

Doesn’t even have to be goals, just something other than the addiction. Obsessively harping on an addiction is counterproductive. The problem with the addiction is it is taking over your life. The solution isn’t to pour even more energy into it.

Find a new hobby.

beats me
been battling it for around 15 years
have had stretches of sobriety, but i always go back
life is better, yet seems so boring, without it
my current gf is a heavy drinker, which doesn't help at all
i try to stick to light beer only, which makes the withdrawals easier to get through, but i've gained almost 20 lbs in 4 months from it
trying to go nodrink today. so far, so good after about 12 straight days of drinking & cutting down the last 2 days
need to lose the weight and get back to my exercise routine. drinking ruins both
