Good Samaritan driving 11-year-old boy shot at Minneapolis park, 'I tried the best I could to save him'

Minneapolis police say they're looking for multiple people who they say shot an 11-year-old boy around 2 p.m. Monday.

"I cannot emphasize how terrible it is to have an 11-year-old boy shot during the day and killed," said Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara.

It happened at the entrance to Folwell Park on Minneapolis' north side, but police say they found the boy a few blocks away when a Good Samaritan flagged down an officer.

Troy Young tells KARE 11 he was just sitting on his porch when a teenager ran down his street carrying the boy in his arms. He was yelling that his brother had been shot.

Young didn't hesitate and got in his truck and the two climbed in the passenger seat - the victim's blood is still on the center console.

"They sat right here, the victim's head fell right here, where the blood is, and we just took off going to the hospital," said Young.

Police would only say the shooting is related to several cars that had been driving through the park and even across its grass. Chief O'Hara said there were multiple people who were there and likely saw what happened.

"Traffic laws didn't matter, it was getting that kid from A to B as fast as you can," said Young about getting the victim help.

He took a detour when he just happened to see a police officer not far from the scene. Both the officer and a paramedic who joined him shortly after attempted CPR. Police say the boy was pronounced dead there - with Young by his side.

"You don't know how to really comprehend it, but you know when somebody takes their last breath," said Young, who is a bull rider and Marine. He says he has seen trauma and was raised to help anyone who might need it.

"I can only imagine what his family members are going through and I just want them to know I tried the best I could to save him," said Young.
