It took me awhile to get into the first book, but I think that was partly due to it being a translated work and having to get used to the names and cultural references. The weird VR world sequences are a slow burn and in retrospect an incredibly cool and haunting way to set up the main conflict. I’m not trying to be too vague here, just don’t want to spoil if you go back to it.
The second book (dark forest) is brilliant though. I don’t want to say much to avoid spoiling it for you , but about 2/3 the way through the second book there’s an encounter that is one of the most stunning things I’ve ever read.
SPOILER STOP READING
(I’m talking about the sequence where overconfident humanity discovers the teardrops and the immediate aftermath)

As articulated by the novels:
Survival is the imperative of all life
While the universe is infinite, the matter in the universe is finite
Also consider: chains of suspicion and technological explosion
What the theory postulates is that the distances in space, the vast timescales involved in communication and travel, and the ability of a civilization to rapidly develop technology make everyone deeply suspicious of each other. Not that different from IRL international relations if you took away the ability to communicate
So, if Civilization A detects Civilization B in a system 5 light years away, A has to consider the consequences of B continuing to exist. If A can see B , presumably B can see A. A doesn’t know if B is aggressive or not. If A does nothing and B is aggressive, then B might be able to wipe out A in a first strike, so A should launch first . If B is not aggressive, but discovers A, B might fear that A is aggressive and for its own survival wipe out A, which means that A should preemptively wipe out B. If B discovers A and B is not aggressive , and B doesn’t think A is an aggressive state, B might still consider that A thinks B thinks A is aggressive and will launch a preemptive strike, which means that B should launch its own preemptive strike, so to be safe A should launch its own preemptive strike. And so on.
Basically the issue is there is no practical way to assure other civilizations of your benign intent, and the time it takes for messages to travel will be so long that by the time a message goes out and comes back, the sender may have experienced centuries of technological development in the interim and become far more dangerous than when the message was sent. Also, it only takes one Uber powerful civilization thinking along these lines to make preemptive destruction the only rational choice for everyone involved.

That's real retarded. Maybe it makes for a good book idk but applying game theory drivel to the universe is not logical.
Should I murder you because resources on earth are finite?
If I come across an ant colony building things the only question from a survival standpoint is whether the resources they are using are more valuable with or without the ants. I don't worry about the ants evolving and killing me for my resources. I can snuff them out at any time, but if they are rare I probably keep them around to study or just for novelty.

You probably would murder me if we couldn’t communicate and there was no social framework to provide consequences for murder. That is the history of humanity. The only things that have stopped it have been the ability to communicate and build trust/verify what the other side is doing.
You would murder the ant hill if it was possible that, the next time you looked at the ants, they had invented a gun and pointed it at your head
