And San Francisco was desperate enough to pay every cent of it. This was a deal for cash and the Sox picked up that SFO was really gung ho to get this done and they said okay wait a minute we should get more compensation and they said okay here are 4 players we don't care about. I wouldn't put any stock into them. If they pan out great if not they're trade chips for what comes next. This was a deal to get 300 million off the books and open up flexibility. This is a deal that says we're gonna make a big free agent splash this off-season. Maybe extend Bregman. They've got all the options in the world right now. You play well and are buyers at the deadline. This deal isn't fully realized until you see who they sign for big money in the off-season. Lots of historical examples of addition by subtraction.
Negative view: cheap fuck owner who never liked the contract from day 1 and waited for the right moment to pull the rug out. More money to spend on the Penguins and Liverpool or whatever.
The truth is probably somewhere in between. See how they play out the rest of the year. The money can be spent better in all likelihood. And Devers was a diva who pissed off a lot of people in the organization. |

Mazz was YSFFM that a big market team that's normally in the top 5 in payroll have been whining about paying a guy real money. Mazz was really butthurt that the team isn't spending through the nose to win now like the Dodgers and Yankees.
