they're turning off their transponders while traversing the strait - you can see them pop up on the other side after.

The Iranians can't really do much about it at this point, their ability to track ships is down to zero - any radar that emits is going to eat a HARM or a JDAM now. They could try to park some howitzers by the shore and lob shells out, but I would bet the area is saturated with US reapers by now. In the worst case, we also have Burkes in the region that were basically designed for this task.

How much damage do you think an RPG can do to a ship the size of a skyscraper? Modern supertankers have double 1" thick hulls. I'm also not 100% sure of the US force composition in the region but I wouldn't be surprised to see some Marine Corps vipers on patrol if surveillance suggests this possibility.

cr. though i suspect they'd be aiming at the superstructure anyway. in any case i can't imagine any responsible carrier would follow trump's advice and yolo it.

The outer no problem but shaped charges can't do shit about double hulls. That's what makes cope cages/slat armor so effective because the explosively formed penetrator deteriorates rapidly in the air gap.

also keep in mind that tank armour can be multiple feet of specially designed materials, compared to like 3cm of soft steel on an oil tanker.

Interesting abstract, but without the details about the simulated warhead and material properties of the steel in the hull it doesn't tell us much. I'll go ahead and concede my priors were wrong and that a 15+15mm double hull probably isn't stopping an RPG-7 HEAT projectile.

The RPG has a reported effective range from 300 to 600 meters to penetrate armor - let's be generous and say 1 km for an unarmored supertanker. The strait is actually 39 km at its narrowest, well outside the range of a man-portable rocket launcher.

Iran says that any Arab or European country that expels the ambassadors of Israel and the United States from its territory will, starting tomorrow, have full authority and freedom to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
