For a regular 3rd grade boys' basketball team made up of kids from the same school playing in their town rec league, should the coach split playing time completely evenly, or give better players more PT so the team is more likely to win?

i lean toward playing to win, but think the coach should follow the standard approach taken by other teams in the league.

A little playing to win, and keeping in your best players when the game is close in the final minutes is cr.

But the coach should still try getting everyone on the team meaningful minutes.

ljl. I'd feel bad for the kids at that age who only play for a single 4 minute stretch while others play most of the game. Winning isn't the only thing at that age.

tbf, i feel bad for them too. but that’s also old enough for them to gravitate toward other interests that will be a better fit for everyone. i don’t know how much giving them more opportunities to fuck up and draw the ire of their peers is helping them in the long run.

3rd grade is still pretty young. Kids should be encouraged to play organized sports until at least middle school. And at that age, if you're not on a "travel team" (which is a big flame, in large part), it should be much more about having fun, playing as a team, being with your friends, and developping skills--and therefore splitting playing time close to evenly--than it is about putting in the best players for the most time so you can win.

im in favor of split at this age but one mistake i think coaches make in this vein is to put the best player with 4 losers and that causes resentment and lack of interest. at least give the top 2 a chance to play together once in a while

Here, people can sign up for a particular team or get sorted onto teams with space. My son's team is all kids from his elementary school. I think a lot of the other teams in the league are the same--entirely or largely comprised of boys from a single school.

Basketball at that age is retarded. Most of the time should be spent working on fundamentals. Kids are barely strong enough to get the ball to the hoop.

Strong emphasis should be placed on how gay basketball is and why they should stop playing such a faggot sport.

Coaching 3rd graders also weird.

If your kid wants to play basketball, this is a negative for their development. Nothing gained but bad habits.

Obviously split time. Not close. At this age it is about learning the fundamentals. Each kid should get an equal opportunity there.

school ball is different because the talent concentration varies a lot.

with our kid's 7th grade/school team it goes like this:

vs really bad teams: 50/50

vs normal teams (e.g. 1 good or 2 normal tier aau players): 50/50 through 3 quarters, then the coach just leaves the the good players in the 4th so they can win

vs schools that have anything resembling an aau team (e.g. 3 or more aau level kids): my kid plays pg full game, rest of team is 50/50 through 1st half, then only starters 2nd half

5th grade and up varsity/travel level teams you play the starters until the game stops being close then you pull them and play everyone else

That’s kinda weird. I couldn’t imagine strict 50/50 in 7th grade. I played for a large competitive school and we had 12/13 on the roster and 2/3 kids almost never played. And the starters played a normal split like you’d see in hs/college.

I think you shouldn’t play 50/50 bc the objective should always be winning. But in 3rd grade you lean more towards an equal split.

Coach should scream and yell at the little shits and then go out on the court and shoot the baskets himself to show them how it’s done. Elbow an 8 year old on the other team and knock out a tooth. Then have prissy pants Jayden sop up the blood off the floor with the jersey off his back.

Teach the boys about the real world.

8th grade we did scrimmages against a team with a coach like that. they were good but not very good though managed to make diocesan playoffs. they were outmatched against us and he'd just run on the court to berate the kids out of frustration.

our coach i think strategically set it up hoping they'd take out our biggest competitor that had two future D1 QBs on the team. one of them is now a registered sex offender.
