Don’t forget this timeless Frank Capra hidden gem, my guy, with Gary Cooper as a down on his luck former baseball player:

Great movie with a stacked cast, full of old timey fun. It’s mostly historical drama and doesn’t go real deep into the characters or motivations. So you get Comiskey being a cheap bastard, the iconic Say It Ain’t So Joe, and hiring Landis as the first commissioner, but you never really understand why Eddie Ciccote actually agreed to do the fix. It’s only surface level that he was stiffed on a bonus.

The movie captures the whole story from the initial plot, Rothstein, the series itself and the trial. David Straithorn and John Cusack are the standout performances, but this movie is more about the scandal than the players.

Rating: Grand Slam, OPS of 1.022

How is the baseball: Bush League. None of the plays look very real, but they do an okay job of showing how a group of players could throw a series without their teammates knowing for sure.

How can you not be romantic about baseball? You can't. You can't not be romantic about baseball, especially when it's an Aaron Sorkin script based on a Michael Lewis book. This is a movie about stats and math taking over sport and it's packed with heart.

I've seen it at least a dozen times and I'm sure you all have too. But, man, the script is just so good. Every scene builds to the next and it hits all these little beats, while mixing in Billy Beane's personal story throughout. The movie is not particularly accurate (there was way more buy-in to moneyball throughout the organization), but that's all forgiven because of how good the movie is.

Rating: Grand Slam, OPS of 1.345

How is the baseball: They cut the real game footage into the movie so that part is all real, but Chris Pratt did not have to pretend he couldn't play first at all. The scenes with actors playing ball were comically bad. Chad Bradford was almost spot on with his throwing arm if the real Chad Bradford could only throw 55 miles an hour.

Subject: The Perfect Game (2009) - .788

This thread is already working out. I had never hear of this movie and I was only vaguely aware that there had been a perfect game in the Little League World Series.

Clifton Collins stars in this true story as a washed wannabe pitcher who moves back to Monterrey, Mexico in 1957 and organizes a little league team that goes on to be 1) the first international team to ever win a game at the LLWS and 2) the only team to ever throw a perfect game in the LLWS championship game (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1957_Little_League_World_Series). That team is the reason Monterrey is still the most baseball crazy city in Mexico. The movie takes tremendous license to tell the story, but this is a fun movie that you could watch with your kids if they're into baseball. If you're a baseball fan, read that wikipedia page. The story is incredible and heartwarming.

Cheech Marin plays a catholic priest and the team encounters all manner of racism along the way to Williamsport, which makes it a better movie that what you would get if it were just a Disney flick.

Rating: Solid double, OPS of .788

How is the baseball: Legit. They futz around with some of the pitching, but the baseball looks like real little leaguers playing their hearts out.
