(It should also be noted that both Waymo and Zoox are massively in the red, and neither of them has a clear path to profitability.) But somehow Elon is going to figure out a way to make the robotaxis stop crashing and clean themselves and justify TSLA's sky high valuation. Sounds like a good investment to me. What's killing Waymo right now is cleaning and maintenance costs. Someone needs to vacuum out the cars at the end of the day. Someone also needs to repair the tires and brakes when they wear out. Neither of those things is going to be automated any time soon. Uber effectively passes those costs on to the drivers, so they manage to turn a profit. But if a robotaxi company has to pay the cleaning and maintenance costs, it is unclear if any robotaxi company can every be profitable.
Honestly, one could turn this into a bull argument for Tesla. If Tesla could get to the point where any Tesla owner can turn their car into a robotaxi when they are not using it, they could be absolutely printing money. But that doesn't seem to be the path that Tesla is taking. Given the aforementioned cleaning and maintenance issues, who the fuck is going to buy a Cybercab? If Elon had tried to build the Model 2 instead and put millions of new Tesla vehicles on the road while perfecting the FSD software, Tesla's valuation could be justified. But he seems to have gotten bored making cars and now he wants to focus entirely on robotaxis and robots. Maybe he will pull another rabbit out of his hat, but I don't see how this is profitable any time soon. |

Thanks for the laughs man, I've probably literally spent 500+ hours of my life deep diving on FSD / Tesla / Waymo / BYD etc content over the last decade and I am a YUGE and LONGTIME investor in TSLA (been pushing it on this bort for like 8 years now), but yeah maybe I'll have to Google this "full self driving thing" sometime and learn a thing or two, gee why didn't I think of that?

The fucking ride is more expensive because that shit does need to be paid by the driver. So Uber's cost is they can only offer the service at a higher price point. On the other hand, fleet maintenance is FAR cheaper than bringing your car to the mechanic. So Waymo has at least that advantage over Uber. But wait till you hear which player in this industry already has dealerships with full service departments already equipped, staffed and operational. LOL

Out of curiosity, since you seem to be a real expert on this topic and you're extremely confident in this assessment, how much time have you actually spent over in China experiencing BYD's FSD tech directly?
I myself have admittedly never driven a BYD, but here's the funny thing: back in September, analysts at Piper Sandler who make money by trying to accurately assess the relative strengths of different companies traveled over to China specifically to do that, and when they came back to America, they had become *extremely* bullish on Tesla:
