BETHEL - In a small Alaskan town with a population just over six thousand, residents have grown accustomed to long criminal trials. The town already holds the record for a three and a half year trial in the early 2000s.

But the jury for State vs. Red Goose was sworn in February 7, 2017, and are still empaneled today, listening to witnesses and examining evidence.

Legal watchers call it the world's longest trial. "There was a long one in California in the late 80s," says Peter Macauley, a CourtTV host, "but nothing like this."

The defendant is Abraham Red Goose, an indigenous resident from neighboring Mumtrekhlagamute Village. (The whole month of April 2017 was spent in argument regarding the spelling of Mumtrekhlagamute.)

Things move slower in Alaskan native culture, but Mr. Red Goose's lawyer Igiugig A'il'guigig is slow by any standard. Sometimes taking up to half an hour between sentences, the defense attorney has been known to interrupt proceedings to gaze out the courtroom window waiting for rain, and once escorted the jury to examine his client's childhood home, which involved a four month trip to Las Vegas that many saw as a boondoggle and waste of taxpayer money.

Charged with public intoxication, Mr. Red Goose has maintained his innocence.

During the course of the trial, which has seen more than 2500 days elapse, several jurors have married and welcomed children.
