Yes. They key to doing this, perhaps counterintuitively, is to focus first on mileage--you need to be doing at least three runs per week, maybe targeting 10 miles total. Once you have that in place, then gradually up your pace. If you can get your general runs down to 6 minutes per mile, you're within spitting distance of doing a 5 minute mile. None of this is that difficult to achieve. You could probably be at a single 5 minute mile within a year starting at an 11 minute pace if you're dedicated. Good luck.

Cr. It was shocking how much faster my 5k time got when I started running much longer distances and longer times. Adding a 60 min run at a leisurely pace once a week shaved two mins off my 5k time.

5 minute mile is quite difficult and even most good athletes can never come close. but it's worth trying.

as you do your training cycle, see if you can get someone fast or someone on a bicycle to pace you over 1/8th mile intervals, then build up toward 1/4, etc., so you can see the speed it takes.

Assuming you're in reasonable shape, and you are not, you can train yourself to do close to a five minute mile in a year or so.

If your current mile time is 11 min, you're looking at more like 2-3 years depending on how much weight you need to lose.

People try to cross train but a lot of serious runners think that cycling is counterproductive because you're engaging the muscles in different, non-cumulative ways.

If you were comfortably trying to do this I'd do something like:

Wk. 1: 1 mile @ 7:00 x3

Wk. 2: 1.5 miles @ 7:00 x3

Wk. 3: 1.5 miles @ 7:00 x3

Wk. 4: 2 miles @ 7:00 x3

Wk. 5: 2 miles @ 7:00 x3

Wk. 6: 2.5 miles @ 7:00 x3

Wk. 7: 2.5 miles @ 7:00 x3

Wk. 8: 3 miles @ 7:00 x3

Wk. 9: 3 miles @ 7:00 x3

Wk. 10: (1 @ 6:30, 2 @ 7:00) x3

Wk. 11: (2 @ 6:30, 1 @ 7:00) x3

Wk. 12: 3 miles @ 6:30 x3

Wk. 13: (1 @ 6:00, 2 @ 6:30) x3

Wk. 14: (2 @ 6:00, 1 @ 6:30) x3

Wk. 15: 3 miles @ 6:00 x3

Wk. 16: (1 @ 5:30, 2 @ 6:00) x3

Wk. 17: (2 @ 5:30, 1 @ 6:00) x3

Wk. 18: 3 miles @ 5:30 x3

Wk. 19: You can go out and do your one mile @ 5.

So start this next week and you'd hit a 5 minute mile by early summer.

Godspeed.

I’d add some long runs. If he can run for 60 mins then five minutes starts to feel like nothing.

What is it actually? I got into running recently and went from not being able to do an 8 min mile to doing a 6 min mile (on a treadmill) in six months. I can do a quarter to a half mile at a five-min pace so if that was my goal I'm sure I could do it. I'm working on the endurance part rather than speed right now.
