Hopefully this isn't too hard. Looks pretty straightforward though. I just don't want to spend $10k on a fence when I can do it myself for $1k. And then I'll know how to do a picket fence and I can start a fencing company (picket fences only) if AI takes my job. Thoughts?

Cr. And I prefer to paint everything first before you start installing. I like to put flex seal where ever any joints are.

Op remember that rot needs air and moisture. I didn't watch the video but paint your posts and put a little bit of gravel in the hole before sinking it. I've used plastic sheathing around the post where the ground layer comes into contact with it. That's almost always the rot point.

So far this year I have sunk 62 posts in my yard. An electric auger is about $150 on Amazon. Good luck.

Ty I've done a lot more research since starting this thread on how to do it and line everything up.

I will take your advice and paint them before putting them in. Planning on gravel. Plastic sheath is also a good idea.

I have to do 24 posts. Currently there is a rotting fence that I need to take out. I might be able to use the holes that are in there now once I remove them (and will have to in a couple spots for the corners). Tho I think theyre only like 12 inches deep.

I was going to try a postdigger but got worn out just thinking about it. Will pick up an auger.

Do not go the post digger route. Those things are useless. It's like a teaspoon of dirt at a time. When digging holes have a pry bar for rocks and some hardy garden clippers for roots. You'll be pulling most of the dirt out with your hands. Id avoid the prior post spots at all costs. Stagger yours by a couple of feet.

Why gravel and not concrete? In my experience the gravel always fails. I pour concrete in dry and maybe do some mixing with water in the hole depending on soil moisture. Some people put nails in the bottom of the post to grab the concrete. I think it's a hassle. Buy extra 2x4s for the bracing. Digging a hole is like a mystery each time only what you find is never good.

I have an electric one. A potato sized rock and it jerks me hard but still worth every penny. I dug a French drain with one. I paid $150. It's almost that much to rent a gas powered one man auger. One of my best purchases.

Edit: wait, like the two arm manual post digger? I use it because I don't always like bending over in a hole but fuck that for anything more than a couple of holes.

Yes, those wraps are definitely worth the money and effort. Posts always rot at the soil line. I also put flex seal where the rails meet the posts. Probably an overkill but I'm not planning on putting up a fence on my property again in my lifetime.

Subject: Question #2

Do I really need to set the posts below the frost line? Thats like 3 feet where I am. Will need to get a bunch of 4x4x8s and one foot of each will go to waste. I thought just 18-24 inches was fine. Have a hard time believing everyone in tristate area is not just doing 18-24 inches.

Wow that's deep as fuck. For frost you want tho hole to be like an inverted funnel or like a bell shaped. That way when the ground freezes in pushes the post deep into the ground. Lots of concrete at the top means it will fail. Also, try and make the hole as small as practical. You want to disrupt as little soil as possible. More concrete is not the answer.

Run two string lines for the top and bottom of our posts and brace them with 2x4s as they set. I like to use the bottom rail for the prior post as the support for the next post. It gets your spacing down and it's one less side you have to brace.

The official measure of the frost line by the county is more than what I am hearing the actual frost line is. I'm just gonna do the official measure anyway bc seems stupid to skimp on that now to save a few hours.

Good point re bell shaped I just watched a youtube vid on that. My area freezes over a lot in the winter.

Good tips man ty.

Use black pine tar on the wood not stain, it will preserve it 1000x better, blocks UV and prevents mold & rot
