The whole point of a broad military alliance is to get higher security for lower cost, not to get into a spending contest with your allies. The global average spend on military is 2.5% but the US spends like 3.4% of its massive GDP and wants NATO countries to spend the same. Chief rival "China" only spends 1.7%.
