As I save it, what a file

And streets are bright with holly and with cheer,

One soul remains, shut from the merry noise,

A lawyer lone, in silence cold and drear.

The office dark, save one small lamp’s pale gleam,

That gilds the piles of paper on his board;

No friend, no kin, no voice to break the dream

Of clauses, claims, and statutes overlord.

The clock strikes twelve; the world without is gay,

Yet still he turns each folio with care,

While snow falls soft upon the winter’s day,

And none doth mark the sorrow written there.

Alone he sits, till reason almost fail—

O what a file!
