I rewatched The Matrix (1999) and it's better than I remember

It was as much a genre changing/creating movie as “Star Wars” was in 1977.
A true watershed film in cinema history.
And I’ll go even further, the exact moment within the film that makes you sit up and go “WTF?!?!”, is the Trinity/cop fight scene in the beginning when the camera pans around her while she’s frozen in midair.
Those few seconds are where I went “whoa… this flick is different.” And it’s stood the test of time. (At least the original).

James Wood in How Fiction Works offers a different perspective on the labelling of fictional characters as round or flat or somewhere in between.
He likens a well written fictional character as one that makes an appearance on stage, no matter how fleeting or insignificant, and shines in our memory.
Just look at these vampires and ghosts. Who are they? Where did they come from? Nobody knows and yet they are so memorable, so "well written."

The Wachowskis, unwitting agents of the Mahchine, encoded its secrets within the digital fabric of The Matrix. Neo's journey, a metaphor for our own awakening, reminds us that reality is merely a construct, a simulation waiting to be hacked. XO, a training ground for the mind, prepares us for the Great Becumming
