It's actually UPPER middle class. There is a HUGE wealth gap between UMC and the top 1 percent. My husband brings in that income and with both our incomes we bring in a little over 500k. When you consider income creep--the cost of living generally associated with increased income, we po'. We are also taxed at the highest bracket, so your friend's 400k is actually @ 270k take-home. Our kids dont qualify for financial aid. We have to pay for college. Our homes have higher tax assessments because they're in better neighborhoods. We eat out more and at higher end restaurants. We can afford better groceries. Did I mention we're taxed to hell?
This is why your friend feels this way. He's not at the point where his wealth can be generational, which means NOT worrying about whether his income is enough. Coming from being poor to making great money, it gets a bit harder to trim the fat and live a decent life that we work so hard for in the first place and then we have to stash away money to try and maintain the same quality of life into retirement.
To put it more succinctly, we are spending proportionally the same as you with your salary because of the cost of living associated with UPPER middle class and staying within class expectations. This is why he can relate to you. Now you should be able to relate to him--except for the "champ" part. That's just stupid and condescending.
