You went to someone’s house and entered their World. Their stars. Their unlocks. Their file named DAD or ASS. The achievement remained with the object, and the object remained in the living room. This made sense in households still organized around Place.

PS1 introduced the Memory Card, now suddenly you could put your Tekken characters, Gran Turismo licenses and Final Fantasy file in your pocket on Friday and carry them across town to the Other House. The television changed. The rules changed. The refrigerator changed. The Save remained.

A lot of future Preps and high tier Nerds learned this early. Identity is not where you are. Identity is what survives the Transfer. N64 kids rarely developed this abstraction. Their Progress was territorial. It lived inside a cartridge beneath one television, usually surrounded by other people’s fingerprints.

Actually the N64 had a memory card (controller pak) commonly used to save western developed games whose Publishers didn’t want to spring for a Battery on the cartridge.

If you played any western developed game it was probably used. Games like Duke Nukem, Turok, wrestling used it. Mario Kart used it to track Ghost races/records.

I had multiple Consoles, but had N64 for it's Japanese Games. I didn't play turok or duke nukem and didn't use it in Mario Kart.
