Tricyclic antidepressants block the neurotransmitters serotonin (ser-o-TOE-nin) and norepinephrine (nor-ep-ih-NEF-rin) from being taken back into nerve cells in the brain, a process called reuptake.

Yes, but aren't older medications more effective than new ones that don't actually work for anyone?

they should be stronger than SSRIs but have heart and withdrawal issues, which is why they're not preferred nowadays

180. The only antidepressants that work. But comes at a cost. You WILL gain a ton of weight. Cymbalta is also pretty solid (SNRI) is also decent and much better than shitty SSRIs.

I have neuropathy from a bad break which caused nerve damage, and was given amitriptyline for it. It did not seem to do anything for that purpose, can't rate it as an antidepressant.

I got put on anafranil by a Pakistani doctor in Saudi over a decade ago. Lost a lot of weight, brain felt wired but depression was reduced. It is used mostly for OCD now.

It is the most powerful SSRI out there. (No, go ahead and look it up before slamming on the Reply button.)

No. I wanted to up my dose after about five months because I was gaining weight back. So a doctor let me. I gave up after maybe three months of that by tapering off on my own.

I was briefly on Contrave about two years later (appetite suppressant drug

which mixes naltrexone and Wellbutrin) but stopped quickly because of palpitations. But that could have been something else causing them.
