wild.

wonder if anyone has ever used a radio that uses tube resistors instead of the modern transistor which became widespread I think in the 60s. You can still buy em on craigslist anywhere but they're usually broken and need some kind of turbo autist to fix. Summon OldHLSDude.

Also anyone who has ever recorded anything to 2" magnetic tape Lionel Richie style. Not sure why I just remember Richie talking about tape in an interview once lol. Analog recording console would be interesting too.

Anyone been on a nuclear submarine?

people have been asking that for a long time. there is some inherent cultural attachment to the Zollstock. It probably has to do with the size of things measured and mobility. I guess Germans like to walk around in circles with giant foldable yardsticks. Maybe it has to do with cars? Idk. Measuring tape does kind of suck and can be hard to deal with especially with just one person. Maybe they're Right?

when the NHL contracted with the Olympics to have NHL players in the Olympics, the NHL had all the leverage and forced them to build an NHL size rink which is smaller than the Olympic regulation rink, and supposedly causes more scoring and less time spent digging the puck out of the corners. The Italian "Engineers" who built the rink insisted on using the metric system, rounded down, and made a rink that was 13 feet too short and 6 feet too narrow. Because fuck you. Metric system.

it’s 411, not 311. There was the saying “what’s the 411?”

Cr. I'm wrong. I swear I remember regularly calling 311 though. It might have been to report hours for my underage work permit to some municipal/state department?

My grandma had a nice IBM selectrix that she'd used to prepare our family's genealogy records. I used it to type all of my papers until the 10th grade when the family finally got a PC. I'm in the 40-45 age bracket

My mom had one. I remember her using it for forms they would otherwise be hand written. You couldn’t do those in an early computer

They're everywhere, if you went to a Liberal Arts College.

Oh, you didn't go to a Liberal Arts College?

every single one except rotary phone and typewriter. i have fucked around on a mechanical typewriter a number of times and my parents had an old one around the house when i was young but never used it for a real task. i did have an electronic 'word processor' that still banged out ink type onto the page.

huge majority of the rest of the list should be near ubiquitous for people starting in late 30s.

Fax machines are still used. I had my hotel send a release form by fax to a clinic that would not accept email only a few months ago.

I used a typewriter until at least 2002. I'm sure you guys used them- there was a time when all rpreprinted forms required this.

But no, sitting and typing a 6 page document no.
