Two choices:

(1) Get $1M right now for doing nothing.

(2) Get $1M for every mile you swim across the English Channel. You need to start within 48 hours. The swim must be consecutive. The final measure will be the furthest point you were from the coast of England or France (whichever you started from). You can't have any support on the swim. You can tow behind you anything you want for safety or for the journey back (or onward across the Channel) after you're done swimming, but it can't help you on the swim. E.g., you can pull a rowboat with you for use after you're done.

Also: You 2x your money if you successfully make it across the English Channel with no support.

Which do you choose?

right, my initial thought was like "oh I've done a mile swim it's nbd" but that ofc wasn't in the English channel.

however I'm still going to say yes on the gattaca theory - in this hypo you don't have to save anything for the swim back

Explain. Unless you make it all the way across, you need something left in the tank to get back to land, though you can get into the boat you've been pulling with you, if you were inclined to do so.

The water off Dover is a comfy 68 degrees right now. Same as it is in the Hamptons. Once you get used to it, it would feel fine. And you can bring a wet suit if you want.

With no clock and a boat you can pull behind youreslf to get back, you should be able to earn way more than $1M extra.

Drowning risk is pretty low. Tow a life boat behind you for when you're ready to give up.

And the waves are pretty small when the weather is good. It's not the open ocean.

You can pull a life vest with you, but once you use it, the hypo is over.

And the hypo isn't that insane. A short, 3 mile swim in fairly calm water isn't that big a deal. Several poa in this very thread have talked about mile-plus swims they've done.

You don't need to all at once. You can swim, float around taking a break, resume swimming... Or, try to catch a current.

I have no idea what my distance-swimming capacity is, let alone my open-water distance-swimming capacity (I'm reasonably but still unsupportedly confident on the former, incredibly pessimistic on the latter).

So I'll take the $1M. Give me some time to train, and especially time to train while deciding, and maybe I try to string together a few miles, but right now I just worry I hit 0 and die.

What is this "tow a rowboat" shit?

What about it? You don't have do tow a boat. You could swim back when you're done, if you're inclined. But if you want, you can bring a boat or life jacket with you to help you get back to land after you swim as far as you're going to. You just can't use that helpful stuff until you're done with the hypo, so if you want to bring it, you need to tow it behind you.

Nigger, two-thirds of us are going to drown within 50 feet of the water getting deeper than 5'8". We are not "towing" a fucking ship behind us, quit being a faggot.

the boat towing hypo is fairly retarded but not as retarded as you might think, things move so much easier in water that a strong swimmer could make that work, if I had an inflatable kayak kind of thing on a string I could probably haul it without much issue and whenever I give out I'm golden

Personally, I could do probly 3 miles, but I dont want to be 3 miles off shore in the English fucking Channel when I decide to stop. Henceforth, I will take the $1mill.

I swim 1 + 1/3 miles every morning (well, most mornings). Without a buttload of additional training lasting months, I could probably do up to 3 miles in open water and that would leave me pretty wrecked. Absolutely no way I can swim the whole English Channel, and if I tried without support, I would die.

So I would at most trust myself to swim 1.5 miles out, and then I would have to swim 1.5 miles back, and even that would involve non-zero risk to my life. All for 1.5 million.

I'll take the 1M and just stay in bed risklessly instead.

you'd need to sleep, and what happens if the raft drifts while you sleep?

The English Channel is 21 miles across at its narrowest. When I swim laps, my cruising speed is around 2 mph. So I would take 11+ hours of cruising speed swimming to cross the Channel, not counting any breaks, and not allowing for extra time to swim in a difficult body of open water. I either swim it all in one day, or I sleep and risk drifting all the way back to the starting point. Nazca Redlines tp's hypo seems to rule out assistance. I don't think I can do it without assistance. I'll take the 1M and stay in bed instead.
