The Iranian frigate IRIS Dena is in distress off the coast of Sri Lanka. Reuters reports that the vessel was attacked by a submarine.

According to Reuters, citing Sri Lankan Navy and Defense Ministry sources, the Iranian warship encountered trouble in the Indian Ocean near Sri Lanka, with at least 101 crew members reported missing and 78 injured. Xinhua, citing a Sri Lankan Navy source, claims the missing sailors are presumed dead.

Adaderana, quoting Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, reports that the ship was near Galle in southern Sri Lanka and issued a distress signal at around 5:08 a.m. local time.

Sri Lanka’s Navy confirmed that at least 35 people have been rescued. The foreign minister told parliament that 30 injured sailors were taken to a hospital in Galle.

Reuters states that the frigate was attacked by a submarine. The Mirror reports that the crew informed Sri Lanka’s Navy that a projectile had struck the vessel.

it'd be cheaper and more tactically sound to police the straits with helicopters for interception backed up by land to sea missile systems. might just be a pride thing
