No one has written a top tier original IP sci fi novel in like 30 years. These things used to be ubiquitous in the 80s and 90s. Really need a jolt of cyberpunk in my life.

just re-read Neuromancer, Starship Troopers, and Ender's Game this year but they didn't exactly age well to the present day

but I do recommend cosmic horror titles by H.P. Lovecraft, Forever War, Dune and Dune Messiah, and the lesser known stuff like Man After Man or tv shows/vidya like The Expanse (terrible dialogue and filler stories in between but probably the most 'realistic' or practical depiction of space combat) and Homeworld series

I think Dune is wildly overrated. It's like an early attempt at complex intrigue and world building but it doesn't have the tight thriller writing and believability of ASOIAF. It's just like a bunch of random crap happens. I think it's really famous because Frank Herbert was really just the first ever do do space opera. But it's not that good.

Neuromancer I think is underrated. It has some silly elements but it's also like literature. It's got some poetic lines and amazing themes even if it's not the most tightly wound thriller. It gave us so much lore that influenced other IP kind of like how Nirvana launched Grunge.

Great pushback on Dune. But for me, I really just see it as a cultural artifact on what really started the whole notion of Hyper-Deterministic Gothic Futurism (like in Alien(s), Warhammer 40k, games like StarCraft, etc.) or the concept of technology in the far, far future as being either terminally regressive from 'progress' or so advanced to the point that its pinnacle at the surface looks ceremonial or ornate like almost medieval.

Nothing is shiny, new or 'Cyberpunk' anymore, because nothing else is new under the Sun in the future. It's all been done already. Technology is either a legend/myth or considered something completely 'mundane' because its so ubiquitous.

And for the rest of society (or humanity, and what's left of it), 'technology' is just so used up and busted to the point that it's no longer even salvageable because the technical knowledge is a "black box" (so over-specialized and technical that it's virtually only understood by the gestalt few) in other words, to them it looks no different than magic.

Yeah modern tech is definitely a problem for sci fi because of phones the idea is that the future isn't going to have any problems, in fact nothing will ever happen. AI is sort of the end of history. We're just going to have robots do all the work for us and we'll sit around on the computer and consume slop and that's the end point of history. Computers have killed all human ambition. What will the conflict of the future be? We're gonna own nothing and be happy.

My pushback on Warhammer is that I've always felt it was too cartoonish to be cool. There's an element of over the top ness to the style that's unserious. The pieces make me think of Gwar or like Kristi Noem's husband's boobs. It's like the bimboification of sci fi. I want it dark and gritty.

There's nothing wrong with Warhammer it's just not that deep. Like what you like but I am never painting those figurines.

Pynchon is sort of like Herzog.

Yeah, the problem with Warhammer is Games Workshop. It’s an extremely litigious (Jewish) company, and despite decades of lore, the setting ultimately exists to sell overpriced resin-and-plastic miniatures to a relatively small base of high-spending customers that are also reaching Boomer age like the owners of GW. This also explains the comically exaggerated look of its setting (giant pauldrons, perpetually complementary color schemes, overembellished physical figures and sizes, etc.) because you're supposed to be able to identify them easier over a giant game board with an even more autistic GM nasalling/DnD'ing the scenario.

As a result, the commercial reality shapes the lore's 'reality'. You get absurd scenarios where ancient spacefaring civilizations invade planets via orbital drops just to fight hand-to-hand on the surface. Or still using chemically-propelled firearms like 'bolters' that are basically just explained as: 'BIG BOOLETS but wait, it's also an explosive Rocket too so it's different.' The setting then offers explanations—advanced armor, shields, any type of exotic/supposedly indestructible alloys & metallurgy, restrictions on AI (obviously like from Dune), limitations of any projectile-based weapons in general — but strategically, many factions could simply bombard the planet, use nukes, or deploy some black-hole, antimatter, or bioweapon and end the conflict immediately (which is what they end up doing anyway i.e. 'Exterminatus').

The trouble with sci fi is it's very difficult to tie it all together and land the plane.

Someone should really buy all of Gibson's IP when he dies and turn it all into movies spinoffs TCGs and video games. It sounds crazy but it's got to be worth hundreds of millions if not billions in gross if someone were to just be shameless about it.

Edit Holy shit it's coming to Apple TV. Black female lead yasss kween.
