After your first month of solitary (N=1), you'll receive a penny. It will double your second month, to two pennies, which will be doubled the third month (to four pennies), and so on for a maximum of four years (N=48). Serving the full sentence will yield 2^49-1 pennies = $5.63 trillion. Your payout will be made in gold, and the final amount will be adjusted for inflation (i.e., paid in 2012 dollars). For ease of reference:

1 year = $81.91

2 years = $335, 544.31

3 years = $1.37 billion

4 years = $5.63 trillion

Here are the rules while in solitary:

1. You will be locked in an underground 10' x 10' x 10' chamber illuminated by exactly one foot square of light. No communication with anyone will be allowed. No writing implements or any other communication device permitted. No games, books, music, or any other entertainment provided.

2. Your family and friends will not be informed of your whereabouts, nor will they have any knowledge of the contract until you've completed your term.

3. Once a month, the cell door will open. You will be given an hour to step outside if you choose. Your term ends as soon as you exercise this option.

4. Food and water will be deposited in a panel twice a day. Your meals will contain the minimum caloric requirements to keep you alive, as determined by a panel of doctors. Unless you specify any dietary conditions (e.g., allergies, religious requirements, etc.) in advance, you will not have any further control over the menu.

5. Once a week, a holding chamber at the back of the room will open. After you step inside, its door will close, sealing the room from your cell. You will shower in this room during routine cleanings and inspections. Refusal to step into the holding chamber before the cleaning crew arrives will end the game.

6. Your furniture will consist of one hardboard bed (no blankets), a washstand, and a flushable toilet with a bidet.

7. You will be filmed at all times by hidden cameras. Any cheating will result in forfeiture of your prize money and payment of damages to the prison company, as determined by an internal review panel. You will serve your sentence nude.

Clarifications available on request.

Consider this: a week in solitary causes hallucinations. What the fuck you think three years in solitary would do?

Obviously we don't have long-term studies on the effects of this level of solitary you propose because it's uniformly considered torture.

LJL, it does that to criminals who A. already have mental problems and B. satisfy their ego function entirely through domination/exploitation of social groups.

Hermits have been around for thousands of years.

Hermits can do anything they want to occupy their time and stimulate themselves. Being locked in a room with not so much as a pad of paper =/= becoming a hermit.

Are you dumb or troll?

LJL, no. Hermits have lived in confined cells, taken vows of silence, regulated themselves on strict regimens of ceaseless prayer and occasional eating, etc. Sorry your university never taught you religious history.

New hypo: Someone does the full four year term. Write some fiction about what you imagine their life is like. I want to see how hysterical you are about solitary confinement.

The isolation for three years (shorter than that it pretty obviously cannot financially be worth it) would give you PTSD, you'd be permanently scarred, unable to form any social attachments, experience frequent hallucinations, be 50% more likely to commit a felony, be much more suicidal.

lack of human contact is completely different. Anyone who thinks they could do this for long enough to earn a significant amount of money is either dumb or troll. Talk to anyone that has done solitary confinement. It's torture. A week would feel like years. Once the door opened after the first month you would already be irreparably mentally damaged and no person would be able to resist leaving the room.

For sure. If the question was would you do it for a fixed time for a substantial amount of money I'm sure a lot of people would. Just like how some people said they would go into this planning to stay for years.

But I doubt that anyone would be able to resist the urge to leave after a month. Certainly not for a year, unless they had already gone batshit crazy.
