It is possible that a band that came out with something truly groundbreaking could make it. Tame Impala was the last artistic-minded rock group to make it really big. He came out of Western Australia and was pretty isolated. He made his first impactful album in 2010 and his last in 2015. Now he hangs out with Kanye and Bieber, does drugs every night per his own admission, and before Covid was spending time in Malibu while his wife rubbed shoulders with the California coastal elites. His latest album was a total flop.

Before that, the next closest band to break through was Alt-J, who had perhaps the most stunning debut record by an alternative rock act of all time. However, fame got to them, they immediately lost their most important musical contributor, and the remaining members never made it back to the mountaintop. They have now transitioned into small business owners back in the UK.

The last artistic American alternative rock act to break through to mainstream success were The White Stripes. After a series of early albums the magic was gone, and Jack became an empresario and entrepreneur, aging into a blues-roots nostalgia act. While he did write some memorable songs, he never achieved the artistic pinnacle of the artistic rock ensemble. The Commonwealth nations still dominate the USA in this domain.

The reasons for this are largely cultural. It would take a long time to explain, but simply put, there aren’t very many people with a high degree of original musical and songwriting talent who choose to forgo mainstream acceptance in the LA monoculture that dominates. One could argue that someone like Sonny Moore or Anton Zaslavski, or even Martin Sandberg and Johan Schuster would in another dimension become world-renowned for their art and originality in a rock format. The temptation of making huge amounts of money and gaining global play by being extremely blue-pilled is too high. It would require a based folk hero to rise up and stick it to the man, but our culture is so soft and most of the population so lost that the odds are slim.

I think his official statement was like I miss my gf and rock fame is all fraud and lies. I remember the singer saying once that the blonde dood hated all the promotional aspects of the job. Apparently old fat loser doods who owned small music halls and local radio DJs demanded that the band hang out with them in private in order to keep spinning their records. And the blonde dood was like this is all bullshit I'm not gonna play the game! I'm an artist!! But Joe and the other two didn't give a fokk about doing what was necessary to maek it.

funny i was thinking something like this the other day about dylan at 23 years old turning his back on the entire shitlib folk scene at the height of his fame. he turned out to be right, but man what unbelievable balls it must have taken. i guess he was so over it he didn't care if it all ended. it would never happen today, but tbf it didn't really happen then either.

Stop saying they it's just one guy who does everything. To be fair Kevin's sound did evolve on the first three records. It went from stoner rock to anthemic electropop. Credit where it's due they're unique albums that changed the landscape. Then he was absolutely cooked thereafter. It's like he forgot how to write a song after 2015. He's been bad now for a lot longer than he was good but the hits are still magical if a bit overplayed.

The Slow Rush is actually not bad. Just like a less good version of Currents, but Currents was really good. Also weird he left "Patience" off of it since that was a really good song.

The new album (and every other loosie he released before it for movie soundtracks etc) is dreck.

Borderline, Breathe Deeper, Lost in Yesterday and Is it True are all good songs and would have fit in fine on Currents. It was lame that he abandoned guitars entirely on that album which is why the reaction was so negative.
