Are we talking academic prestige? If so, then
Vanderbilt
Florida
Texas
Texas A&M
Mizzou
Mizzou is debatable, but I believe the above are only five AAU schools in the SEC, so that's probably the obvious answer.

The graduate programs at the University of Florida (UF) in Gainesville and the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) are both highly regarded, but they tend to have different areas of standout strength in national rankings.
Overall, UT Austin often has a slight edge in having more top-10 ranked graduate programs across a wider range of disciplines, particularly in engineering, business, and select science and social science specialties. UF, however, excels in other specific professional and scientific fields.
🏛️ Top Graduate Program Strengths (Based on U.S. News Rankings)
University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin)
UT Austin is generally recognized for its strength in Engineering, Business, and Computer Science. Many of its individual graduate programs and specialties consistently rank in the top 10 nationally.
• Engineering: The Cockrell School of Engineering is consistently ranked in the top 10 nationally (e.g., Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and notably Petroleum Engineering at No. 1).
*
• Business: The McCombs School of Business has multiple top-10 specialties, including Accounting at No. 1 and top rankings in Information Systems and Management.
• Information/Geosciences: The School of Information and Jackson School of Geosciences are also often ranked in the top 10.
• Other Top 10 Specialties: Includes programs in Education, Social Work, and several disciplines within the Natural Sciences (like Applied Math and certain Computer Science specialties).
University of Florida (UF) - Gainesville
UF's graduate strength is often found in the Health Sciences, Agriculture/Biological Sciences, and specialized Law and Education programs.
• Health & Professional Fields: UF often features top-ranked programs in areas like Veterinary Medicine (Top 5) and specialties in Rehabilitation (e.g., Occupational and Physical Therapy).
• Engineering & Agriculture: It has top-ranked programs in specialized engineering fields like Biological/Agricultural Engineering (Top 5).
• Education & Law: UF has seen significant gains in its College of Education (reaching the top 10) and has top-ranked specialties in Tax Law (No. 2) and Student Counseling and Personnel Services (No. 1).
• Other Noted Areas: UF generally excels in Agriculture, Health Sciences, Biology, and Environmental Sciences.
⚖️ Key Program Comparisons (Examples)
The "better" school depends heavily on your specific field of study.
• If your primary interest is in Engineering, Business (especially Accounting/Finance), Computer Science, or Geosciences, UT Austin is generally the higher-ranked and more established choice.
• If your primary interest is in Veterinary Medicine, certain Health Professions, Agriculture/Biological Engineering, or highly-ranked specialized Education/Law programs, UF is a powerhouse and may offer the superior program.
the University of Florida (UF) generally has stronger, more established rankings in many Health and Rehabilitation graduate fields compared to the specific programs at the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin).
While UT Austin is a powerhouse in many STEM fields, the UF Health system has historically driven a higher national profile for professional and allied health degrees.
Here is a detailed breakdown of how the graduate programs in medical/health-related fields generally rank against each other:
⚕️ Medical and Health Graduate Program Comparison
Key Takeaways: UF's Edge in Professional Health
🥇 Programs Where UF Takes a Strong Lead
The University of Florida's strength in the health sciences is clear across several key professional programs:
• Pharmacy (PharmD/PhD): UF's College of Pharmacy is a perennial top-5 program, significantly outranking UT Austin's well-regarded but lower-ranked college.
• Veterinary Medicine: UF has a top-5 program in Veterinary Medicine, which UT Austin does not offer.
• Rehabilitation Sciences (OT/PT): UF's programs in Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy are highly respected and consistently place in the top 20 nationally. UT Austin does not have programs that achieve this level of national recognition in these specific fields.
• Medical School (MD/PhD): The UF College of Medicine ranks higher in research than the newer Dell Medical School at UT Austin.
🥈 Programs Where UT Austin Excels
UT Austin is stronger in two important graduate fields related to health:
• Public Health: UT Austin's School of Public Health typically ranks higher than UF's program.
• Nursing (Master's/DNP): UT Austin's nursing programs are generally ranked higher than UF's.
🎓 The Key Difference
The main differentiator is institutional focus. UF has long been known for its comprehensive, highly-ranked Health Science Center (encompassing Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Dentistry, and Veterinary Medicine), which elevates its professional and allied health graduate rankings.
UT Austin's focus has been on its globally dominant Engineering and Computer Science programs, and its Dell Medical School is relatively new, which can limit its historical ranking profile in comparison to established institutions.

In high school, I was a National Merit Scholarship winner. From the fall of my junior year on, I was deluged with mail from Alabama. They basically offered me acceptance and a full ride automatically. In my senior year, these offers seemed to arrive every few weeks. I had never acknowledged Alabama in any way. Never visited, never called, never even pulled up their website on a computer.
I got in early at HUG and never looked back. But sometimes I think, it would have been cool at least to make a visit.
